Trouble getting into 1st gear and reverse

Sometimes, I have a hard time getting into 1st or Reverse. If I shut it off and start it again, it'll (sometimes) fix itself. Any thoughts about what may be causing it?

Probably the clutch hydraulics. How's the pedal feel? Soft or low?

Reset the synchros by shifting into another gear and then trying again. You also might try replacing your transmission fluid with some Redline MTL.

Clutch pedal feels fine. Shifting out and back in doesn't work unless I shut down first.

How long since you've changed the transmission fluid?

Dunno. I've only owned the Jeep for a couple months, so it's possible it's been a while.

Usually if you let the clutch out, then depress it again, 1st and reverse become easier.

Well, in that case I’d change all my fluids as a starting point, so you have a baseline for maintenance. The transmission fluid is a good starting point. Use Redline MTL.
