Weird sounds after engine bay detailing

Don't. We all start out unaware of things that eventually become obvious. It's part of the learning process!

Look on the bright side - you had the stones to learn a manual transmission. That's a very rare trait in your generation!

And...

Welcome to the forum!

Appreciate it! Glad to be here!

I still have a lot of questions about this whole paragraph.

  • leaving it in gear w/o the parking brake should not be a problem
  • how did putting it into 4WD allow to you back up?
  • what was keeping you from backing up in 2WD?
  • why would an engine detail have touched the 4WD shifter?

Glad you got it sorted out.

I wasn’t aware it was bad or good, still new to stick shift. Will take any and all advice! lol. And I’m not sure. Seemed like it was stuck in between 2wd and 4wd. If i would have know i would have just put it back into the correct position and it probably would have been fine. That i would not know, they slammed the hell out of the hood after showing me the engine detail they did. Couple of red flags but I’m glad it wasn’t anything major

There are debates either way, but I was always taught to leave in gear & put on the parking brake. These days I usually just leave it in gear. Neutral with the parking brake just seems like a recipe for disaster, esp given that nobody really maintains any aspect of their parking brake. I think the leave it in neutral bit probably has it's origins back when if you tried to start a manual w/o the clutch it would jump forward*. But with clutch safeties now it seems like a car just freely rolling is the more likely scenario.

* the only time I've ever heard my dad curse was in like 1985ish as we're taking delivery of our brand new Plymouth Caravan, complete with wood on the side. For some reason we were in the service bay and they had to move a Renault Fuego out of the way. Why a Renault was in the service area of a Dodge dealership I can't say. Why I remember that detail, I can't say either. Anyway, some kid shop hand gets in to move it. Turns the key (without the clutch) and BAM! it obliterates the front quarter panel of the car we had just signed papers on. My dad just goes "YOU SON OF A BITCH!" and I remember nothing more after that, but man what I would give for video of the dealership scrambling to pick up the pieces. And that's the story of how clutch safeties got invented.
