I was taking apart my transmission I don't remember where this goes or what it is

Well the part shown by David keeps the timing chain from slapping around in the cover and places light tension on the chain. You state that you were working on the transmission and so would presumably rule out that particular part. Again looks like it mounts into the transfer case housing but I am not sure as I cannot find a clear picture or diagram.

However, if you were not in the transfer case that would rule out that possibility too.

Is it possible that it was just laying around and not a part from what you were doing that day?

We took off the front timing cover as well. I left that out because all the bolts are in a separate tray

I think your part is the timing chain guide. There should be a couple of tabs on the inside of your timing chain cover. See if your part slides in ( It will only fit in one way). Flat side of the part against the cover and the raised side will be facing the chain when the cover is installed.
