Wrapping doors to match color

Where are people finding half doors for this cheap?
Was that FB marketplace? Salvage? eBay?

Ya, I scored. Usually I see them for about $500 without uppers and in a bit of rough shape. I happened to be browsing craigslist car parts with a "jeep" filter and saw the ad just an hour or so after it posted.

Silver doors, no rust at all with one tiny dent. Black interior panels and black upper doors too. They are missing a few trim pieces, but otherwise in great shape. Unfortunately, I have a green Jeep with tan interior, but when I saw them I called immediately and met him just an hour later.

If someone local has green doors or tan interior and wants to meet up for a trade PM me. Otherwise I think I will wrap them myself and not worry about the black interior panels.

Wow. I need to look at CL... solar yellow is still not that common though. I’d be tempted to flip the silver half doors, make a quick profit, and keep searching for doors in my color. Although, I don’t have to worry as much about finding a rust free pair down here.

I know this is an old post but curious if you went thru with wrapping them yourself. I bought a black set off FB marketplace to use on my silver LJ. Got them reasonably cheap because the driver door is rough with some rust around the bottom so I don't want to spend the money to paint.

Plan to follow some YouTube vids and wondered if you had any tips on size you bought or areas that were difficult.

I wrapped mine last year. Used some 3M vinyl, did it in my kitchen. I had never done vinyl wrapping before. Maybe a smidge sloppy around some of the edges on the backside but most will never notice and it's holding fine. Of course my Jeep is just a mishmash of different shades of black so no concern at all was given to that aspect. $76 for a 5x4 sheet of 3M 2080 series from rvinyl.com

Also, I don't remember the exact measurements of the door or how much I had left over afterwards, but I do know that I just trimmed the vinyl to the edges of the back of the doors where the outer skin is folded over, if that makes sense. If you wanted to cover the rest of the exposed color to the inside of the door around the door cards you might need to take some more measurements and probably buy more vinyl than the 5x4 that I used.

That 3M 2080 is pretty great to work with. It lays down without lubrication, but it peels up easily and can be moved around and repositioned until you apply heat. Once you hit it with some heat it becomes elastic and adheres with a little pressure. And it's porous enough to let some air out. I can't stress enough how much of an amateur I am at vinyl and I covered both doors first time with no mistakes or blemishes, bubbles, etc (aside from a couple folds at the tight radiuses behind the door where I think I just wasn't patient enough with the heat.) There are a couple good videos specific to the 2080 on youtube.

I did do the wrap. I had never done it before, but the flat Jeep doors made it pretty easy. I used 2 rolls of 3ft x 5ft VViViD 3MIL matte black from Amazon and it turned out well enough that I still have it on. My TJ is green, but I thought a flat black would look better than an un-matched green.
The hardest part was probably the hinges. I dismantled the door, but getting the wrap around the hinges was hard and is the worst looking part, but again, it is not a show car, so is good enough for me. The top of the door was also a bit hard to get to lay flat with all of the different Angeles, so I have some bubbles there as well.







Don't worry about reviving old posts, it's a 21 year old car. Any post less than 20 years old is probably still relevant.

Thanks. I saw that VVIVD on Amazon and was curious how well it held up. Sounds like it's doing well for you.

My rig is far from a show car so if I can get a close color and make it look decent I plan to give it a shot.

It has stayed on and taken some trail pin-striping without ripping, but I have nothing else to compare it to. I would get it again though.

Would you by any chance have any photos of trail pin-strippings? I'm guessing the vinyl held but it's still visible to a degree

Doesn't bother me as I would rather re-wrap instead of paint since it's much cheaper
