Warn sells a steel hawse fairlead and steel wire rope with some of their vr winches.

That is the Warn P/N 73850 standard black iron hawse fairlead that Warn supplies with the VR8 winches.

A steel cable would make short work out of an aluminum hawse. It would be basically a giant rasp with a lot of force chewing away at the aluminum.
