Thread stripping problem with 10.9 metric bolts from Lowes

Go to ace hardware (midwest fasteners vs Hilman) or order from McMaster. Fastenal is good too, but you gotta buy a bunch. I've also had good luck with Bolt Depot, online. I don't buy my hardware from Home Depot or Lowes (or menards). Its either online, if I need a bunch, TSC (or family farm and home) if I need Standard stuff...Ace for the random metric or specialty stuff.

What load they are trying to achieve and how they get there is on most torque charts including the one you linked.

Spoke with a guy from Bolt Depot. I told him my problem and I asked him if their fasteners are higher quality than Lowes or Menards. He said the ones I had were likely overtightened. Nice honesty and not trying to sell anything. I told him I used antiseize with reduced torque values. He said do not use antiseize on zinc bolts.

Will try again without antiseize and report back...

He is mistaken. Very few grade 5 and above will strip the threads before they break. That tells you that you are dealing with crap fasteners.
 
I read an interesting research paper that says the mode of failure for a bolt is largely dependent on how much of the threaded portion is in the grip range.

Less threads in the grip range = more chance of thread failure
Full threaded bolt = fracture failure

This is consistent with my shock bolts breaking off (full threaded) and the control arm bolts stripping out the threads (threaded only at the ends)

Does this go along with any of your real world experience Mr. Blaine?

Interesting, I see that on the chart now.

It is interesting that the threads are stripping before the bolt is breaking apart. I'd be curious to know what tolerances they comply to when making hardware for these big box stores and the like. Seems like the width of the land at the root of the thread is always quite a bit bigger on a store bought bolt vs threads I cut, most class 2 threads. Though I'd bet it's more likely some type of heat treat issue before I'd imagine their rolling dies would go out of spec and go unnoticed

true, but if you happen to work for a company with a business account, the prices make up for it.

Last time I was messing around with transfer case drops and needed some bolts, a bag of 25 of them from Fastenal was cheaper than buying 6 from Ace. It might have been comparable to TSC or Big R since they price by weight.

Oh, I have a WHOLE cabinet full of fasteners because I can't stomach buying them for 2 or 3 dollars a piece, when I know I can get a bag for 10 or 12 bucks.

same. when I realized I had a pile of fasteners in which I almost never can find what I actually need, and I'd moved them through 3 different houses, I threw them in a box along with some nearly worthless used Jeep parts and orphaned chinese sockets that were 3rd and 4th duplicates of their size and put it on a FB marketplace ad saying "you can have these parts for $10 but you have to take ALL of it".

Haha. I have many boxes of bolts that are half or less full that will never get used. Those jobs needed enough hardware that the full box was cheaper.

I usually tell my neighbors to come "shopping" at my house before running to the hardware....Chances are good I have what they need. Even if I DO decide to buy individually for the job, I buy extra. Its cheaper to pick up one or two extra vs the cost of my time, running BACK to the store if something goes wrong.

So true. The $2 bolt just doubled and it cost you 30 mins. I have a industrial hardware store 3 miles from me (and a lowes 1.8 miles). They intentionally put the hardware in the back of the store so you have to walk by all sorts of cool stuff. It is more than I can take.
