So earlier this year I left my old job and took on a new line of work with the original manager whom hired me at the old job about 8 years ago. Made some good connections through work and stumbled upon a hefty deal on a 3 bedroom duplex about 2 miles from work in a quiet area.

Driving a little over a hour each way every day was getting a little old & expensive, the upside was that traffic was worse in the opposite direction. The downside, constant construction, weather (ice/snow) accidents.

Got the keys Friday during work for the new place fully expecting to take the weekend to move… Saturday was a wash, we had high winds which caused a lot of power outages throughout the state and no way in hell was I pulling a trailer. Spent most of Saturday just packing what I could.

Sunday was the day. 6am drove a hour to get the work truck and bosses trailer & got home at 8am. Debated what the hell I was going to do with my aquariums :( sadly I decided it was best to let them go. Had a 90 & 55 gallon tank for about 12 years. Made the call to my old coworker. Him and his buddy came right out and took everything. Began with hauling furniture down 3 floors (steps are terrible) managed to get one load to the new place around 7pm then was back to the place I’m moving from around 9. Slept on the floor.

Monday, took a day off work without pay :( carried out everything else & finished vacating the place by 8:30. Dropped off 2 pairs of massive vintage speakers to my dads place. Safes suck balls to carry down steps & I didn’t realize how much glass and pots/pans I had.

Got to the new place around 9:30pm, unloaded the trailer completely about 10pm. Ran to the local grocery/home store. Bought coffee, tortilla shells for my peanut butter honey breakfast wrap and shower curtain.

Had a peanut butter honey wrap for dinner when I got back from the store (I had no idea what bag or box food and supplies were in. Put my shower curtain up, found my clothing for the morning, set up my bed on the second floor and promptly crashed out around 11pm.

Got up at 6am for work, returned home afterwards and began the unpacking crates boxes and bags. I’m still lost on where everything is and am too exhausted to continue. No food in the fridge, a few cans in the cabinet. Currently surviving on beef jerkey.

Did everything on my own, 3 flights of steps picking the trailer driving and unloading. Upside now though is that I’ve got 1 neighbor, have a washer and dryer now, have a garage, got a basement, 2nd floor. Back porch and a back yard & im right down the road from work.

Tomorrow I’m hoping I can get groceries, but I still need to clear the kitchen countertops to cook. Probably gonna warm up a can of green beans then head to bed.

I’m hoping this is my last for a while at least.

Never realize how much shit you accumulate until it’s time to move it.

I think I’m gonna work on being more towards the minimalist side of life from this point on. Had two couches before the move & one met the sawzall. If you’ve ever moved one of them couches that has a hidden bed tucked up under it I’m sure you understand why.

Tossed so many good things. @matkal i did save that powered subwoofer. It’s somewhere in the chaos.

Got room for the jeep indoors now 👍

Hide a bed couches are the WORST!😂
I’m going to be making a trip to Harbor Frieght soon, maybe I can pic up the sub then?Jeeze….I just read the first post…..I really appreciate you saving the sub!
Another plus: you’re WAY closer to the good wheeling!

We're in the process of moving now. We hired a couple of guys to come and pick up our already packed boxes and put them on the truck. Its money well spent

Professional movers are a different breed, I don't know how they go all day long. Moving from Louisville to Kansas City my new company paid professional movers to come pack, load, move and unpack everything. That was awesome and spoiled me completely.

Next move from KC to Nashville I had to foot the bill but I was highly motivated to move back to Tennessee so I didn't mind. The movers sent an estimator out to take stock of our home and it only took him about 20 minutes to get an estimate for me. Looking at the list of estimated prices to move everything I realized I needed to drop weight and move all my TVs on my own. It was crazy how expensive it would have been to move TVs so I used my parents van and packed it with a couple of TVs and most of our glass items. Then I sold the commercial treadmill and elliptical, sold the sectional couch in the basement, sold an entire bedroom suite, and a huge cabinet in the master bedroom. The company came and packed everything and loaded the truck. Then they weigh the truck to get the final bill and it was something like 2-3000 lower.

It always amazes me how much folks will pay to move or store some broken/worn out furniture, or a set of bar glasses that haven't been out of the cabinet in over 5 years.
I used to have a local storage unit for holiday decorations, camping gear, etc. but once I did the math and realized I was paying 2-3X more to store that shit than it would cost to replace it, it all went into the dumpster.
I can't wait to move out of our current place and I can get rid of half of this shit.

I left a LOT behind in California. Sold a bunch, gave a bunch away, and left a bunch for the new owner.

Evidentially the movers in CA realize everyone is moving out of state with a bunch of cash from the house sale, so they are racking up the bills.
My accountant just moved from SoCal to Arizona. He paid a ridiculous amount for a 10' u-haul truck because it was a 1-way trip.
There's probably a market for someone to rent trucks for 1-way trips TO California...

moving does suck, but it sucks less if you plan ahead and actually pack before moving day :ROFLMAO:

Assume you're single and no kids, so I do remember doing that a few times. But now it would be impossible.

FWIW, my move this summer from Monument, CO to Edmond, OK ended up costing about $6k. $4800 for the movers with a 26', $400 to rent an enclosed 12' Uhaul trailer, and $700 to rent a Suburban at the last possible minute when we still had a few things left when the truck and trailer were full.

I don't count the $1000 it took to move our stuff out of a storage unit a month later because that was just a consequence of the 2021 housing market not making things easy.

We recently moved - all the way across the country in fact. Having moved (locally) a few times, you can definitely accumulate some shit. We are faaaaaaar from "hoarders" and I throw stuff away, donate clothes/kid stuff regularly, and generally am super well organized.

That said, it took us MONTHS of cleaning, preparing and packing to fit everything into this 20' U-haul (we didn't take any furniture) and there wasn't a lick of space to put a postage stamp when we finally closed the door. We even had to put our luggage in the LJ each morning! I ended up giving a bunch of stuff away - things I was "hoping" to keep but was okay with donating. A few of my Jeeping buddies in AZ got a lot of welding gear, scrap metal, 3-ton jacks, etc. - which I was more than happy to give as a "thank you" for their time and energy in the 110º weather as we were doing the final "load up".

We ended up doing it ourselves - though I had lots of help in AZ (thanks to good buds like @starkey480 willing to lend a hand!) and once we got to PA. We wanted to hire movers, but the shortest window we could find was a 2-4 week pickup time and a 2-4 week drop off time - potentially not having our stuff for 8 weeks. In the end, it still cost a heavy chunk of $$$ (about $6000 in total between the rental, gas, hotels, etc) but was still 1/2 the cost of professionals (again, not that cost was the driving factor here).

I loaded my firearms, ammo, and several boxes of very fragile stuff into the old MBZ and drove it cross country myself. A bunch of Greek vases, an Aughkstra (stained glass window) in a custom crate, the main altar, and an old computer. There wasn't room for anything else in the car! A forgotten metal stand - about 6 inches high - for one of the vases was a REAL problem finding a place for at the last minute. It ended up on the rear shelf which was the only place it would fit! The weight of the guns & ammo was significant.

That stuff was also professionally packed for me. The rest I packed myself and the movers moved it. They handled the piano far easier than I thought they would!

When we moved from our last house 20 years ago, we filled 1/3 of the semi. I asked the guy the biggest move he did and he said 3 semis.

I thought that was nuts, but 20 years more of accumulating crap and it makes more sense. I'm probably up to 2/3 of a load now.

Thankfully, it was paid for by the company and close enough I was hauling stuff each weekend to the temp company apartment.

My parents and brother moved
in the last couple years. They didn't pack for shit and it made the moves harder. But they only moved 10 and 3 miles and we had my brothers big ass enclosed trailers.

The gun safe was the worst.

My wife and I agreed if we move again we are either hiring someone to do everything or leaving everything behind and starting over.

done it myself the last 4x.....everybody says "why didn't you call" or "i coulda gave you a hand" and the reply is always the same. thank you ....................but i don't ask just so i don't get asked.
4x for me is all good....... 20x for all your friends cause you got a pick-up..................nope.
