Good write-up on DIY re-gearing?

When it is time to regear I'm thinking of doing it myself since I like learning new things and buying new tools. But swapping gears is no easy task and takes some specific skills. I can rebuild an engine but have always shied away from transmissions, transfer cases and differentials.

Everybody who rebuilds differentials had to do it for the first time at some point...so why not me? What I'm hoping for is a very detailed re-gear how-to so I can see if I want to learn how to do it right, and if I even have the ability.

I would appreciate it if anyone can point me to a good one. Oh, and I have a Dana 30/Dana 35 not that it really makes a difference. Thanks!

it occurs to me that the OP asked for a write-up, not a video, and I don't know if that wording was intentional...i was long of the opinion that I just want to read something because I can absorb way more info in way less time than I can by listening. I'm still mostly of that opinion, but I will say that Mike does a great job of sticking to the facts and not droning on with unneeded information or long clips of watching him silently do something tedious, and also doesn't try to play comedian like one has to do to keep the ADHD generation watching. It's easily one of the most watchable instruction-type Youtube channels I've come across, and to have gotten that good in the short time he's been at it is impressive (by comparison, take a look at early videos of a lot of the more popular channels and realize it often takes them years to reach that level).

I went through the same thought process as OP a couple months ago- everyone has to do it for the first time at some point!

After many, many hours on the interent, I can say without a doubt that BFH Garage (@hosejockey61) has the absolute best regearing videos out there. Billavista's Gear Setup Bible is the best writeup out there.

Thank God I found this! Looks like I am neck deep in the rebuild on my Dana 30. I currently need to figure out a way to make set up bearings. Did anyone just purchase the bearings? I can buy a rebuild kit at O’Reillys for 103 .99…..But that will duplicate a lot of stuff that I’m going to buy in the master rebuild kit. Anyone got any ideas on sourcing just the bearings? They’re gonna be junk when I’m done cause im going to grind on them too allow them to slide on and off. Of course if I’m totally stupid here, feel free to jump in. Thanks guys! Take the old bearings and open them up a little to where they slide on and off by hand.

They’re gonna be junk when I’m done cause im going to grind on them too allow them to slide on and off.

Don't do this to the new bearings. Also, if you need a press, I recommend the HF unit.

Make sure you spend the time to check, recheck, and re-recheck everything again before installing the diff cover. Imperfectly set up gears means the new gears will toast in short order.

Make sure to ONLY fill the diffs back up with a conventional GL-5 gear lube, this is critical to them breaking in properly. And during the first gear lube change too at a minimum. Personally I stayed with conventional gear lube.

Pinion Bearings: Front Inner HM88649. Front Outer M86649

Rock Auto has all of those for cheap. You can double check against Amazon for anything to make sure you’re getting good deal.
