I have a 99 4.0 with an ax-15. had trans rebuilt around 155k its just past 180, ( so 30k and maybe 6 years on fluid)
Been sitting for a while i noticed while reving high and shifting from 2 to 3 there was a slight grind like it didn't want to go into gear. Clutch engagement was about 1/2 - 3/4.

Changed the fluid and it was BLACK... I ordered red line mtl 90 but got sent 80 weight, put it in anyway. and now my clutch engages like a 1/2 inch from full compression. Shifts feel very tight. I have to have clutch all the way in and slowly put pressure and it will go into gear with out any noise. If i shift too fast is seems like it starts to grind.

why would fluid change, change my clutch engagement?
Should i change the fluid again?

It wouldn't change your clutch engagement but it could absolutely change the way your bearings and synchronizers behave which could be perceived as a change in clutch engagement. Not knowing anything about the oil they sent you, I would change it to something aisin recommends. I like synth 10w30 because I can walk in and buy it anywhere any day.

That being said, it's common for the ax15 to gripe about fast shifts. Mine is literally brand new and works best with light pressure until things match up and then it just falls in.

80 weight what? A standard GL-5 gear lube? If that's what you installed I'd immediately drain and refill it with Redline MT-90.

Or go find a 75W-90 GL-5 that specifically says "Safe for yellow metals" on the back label, some are safe for yellow metals... more likely found with synthetics.

Especially change what you installed right away if it says "Compatible with limited slip differentials" since that means it contains a friction modifier that will screw up the gear synchronizers inside the transmission.

right?? Doesn’t say anything about friction modifiers (haven’t been driving the jeep cause didn’t like the way the trans felt)

Why does my pedal feel so different?

Labor says gl4, and nothing about a friction modifier. Should I drain it or what

So how can I adjust my pedal? Clutch hasn’t gone out in 30k right? It’s never been this stiff since I had it at 125k

So I looked at the fluid lever for the master cylinder, saw some gunk in the bottom of the reservoir. Put cap back on and now my pedal feels softer and shifts are much smoother.

Gonna bleed my master cylinder and try to get new fluid in there.
