Hi, I need some help with an oil leak. My TJ is a 2004 4.0 with the 42Rle. I run 33s on a Dana 35 S with 4.88 and an E locker. I've a Dana 30 with chomoly axels and lunch box in the front. Friday I was out and got stuck on a muddy/rocky 25degree incline. My son was spotting for me during my battle with this hill and after about 3 miniutes in the same spots he calls me off and says "you're done"! I was spilling out motor oil. I backed the jeep down the hill and shut down while I still had oil pressure. Turns out I lost 1 1/2 quarts of oil in about 3 or 4 minutes on that hill. We checked everything an there was no visible damage - only oil drips at the bottom of the bell housing. I refilled the lost oil. I gave up on that hill, but otherwise finish the rest of the day wheeling. I drove home 70 miles that day watching my oil pressure and it was fine. My jeep is setting in the garage now - not a drop of oil on the floor! A side note - my son mention he saw a few oil drips from me on another rocky incline but nothing like the first time. What could this be other than the RMS? It seems a RMS would be leaking all the time just not on an incline, but I don't know about this. Any advise or experience on this matter would be helfull and really appreciated!

If it was visibly pouring oil out on the incline, I’d think maybe the rear part of the oil pan gasket.
I agree with MT's post above.
Chock the rear tires and jack up the front of the vehicle to the same approximate angle.
Leave the vehicle for about 30 minutes and inspect for leakage.
The problem is probably due to the rubber gasket drying out or the RTV not sealing where the rubber gasket meets the pan gasket.

That is someting I can try. I have a slope on my driveway. I'll park on that slope and see if it leaks. If so I'll investigate the oil pan gasket. I'll let ya all know what I find. I'll get back next week.

Also check your valve cover gasket. My leaks a little from there when parked on an incline.

Hi went under the jeep and checked the bolts. A couple were backed out a turn or so. I tightened them, but I was still leaking on the incline. I dropped the oil pan and found the gasket damaged right there in the rear of the pan. Here is the photo of it.
Yes I did which required removal of the stock skid plates to gain access to the muffler flange. I had been wanting to take some measurements for a future tummy lift so now was my chance!
Hey thanks! I had been here to the forum many times for tips and advice. What a great forum for TJ owners! So a little background on this issue. I had the jeep in the shop for a transmission rebuild in 2019. While there I had them do the RMS. Jeep comes back transmission is fine, but it was still leaking oil. I take it back and the master tech says he let his trainee do the RMS work. They took it in and fixed the oil leak. Sr tech said the kid put top half of the RMS in backwards. So I’ve been happy with since that final repair. But since 2019 I’ve never stood it up like and been stuck in the same place to have someone see it leak. Anyway I believe tech trainee probably damaged that gasket when he did the rework. So this time I did the pan gasket and RMS myself. So far no leaks! I’ll go back up to Beasley’s Knob when it dries out and pick up where I left off!! Hopefully no leaks this time.

I’ve wanted to try Beasley Knob, but definitely not when it’s wet from videos I’ve seen.
Seems like it rains every afternoon up there this time of year. My son made it all the way through a couple week ago in his xj but he had to use track boards

Dang. I have a 2-1/2 in lift but only 31” tires and a lunchbox locker up front. How do you think it would do on a good dry day?
You would have some trouble on 31s because of the deep ruts in some areas that are unavoidable. He was on 33s and dragging the diffs then having to drop the track boars in few areas. We also did some Roman engineering to get him up the most technical area.
