Oil pressure

While moving down the road my oil gauge reads around 43 but when I slow or stop it drops down to around 23. I have not noticed this before. I just did an oil change. Put in a MOPAR filter and changed the oil with Valvoline 10w-30 conventional.

Varying oil pressure is 100% normal. The oil pump is engine driven so the oil pressure goes up and down in direct step with the engine rpms.

Only on newer TJs will the oil pressure not go up & down with the engine rpms. Because the normal varying of oil pressure scared some early TJ buyers, since early TJs gave the real oil pressures, the oil pressure gauge was reprogrammed in later model TJs so it stays in the center no matter what the true underlying oil pressure is so long as it's within safe limits.

I forgot to mention 10 PSI per thousand engine RPMs is a good rule of thumb for good acceptable oil pressure.

To DUR4MAX: I have an aftermarket Autometer oil pressure gauge (electric, not a mechanical gauge) installed in my 2005 4.0 liter. It reads exactly as you describe.

Look at the gauge face , if you have numbers on the face it's an actual oil pressure gauge , if it has L to H it is the glorified oil pressure idiot light.

Our 99 has a real gauge , our 04 has the fake gauge. A 06 would have the fake gauge.

wish my 06 had real gauges instead of dumbed down ones. the things we do to accommodate stupid people. smdh!
