I think the Air Force used the carbon remover variety. The Navy didn't have the much carbon, but we had a lot of paint. (USMC: if it moves, salute it; if not, paint it!)

Melted many a spoon too. Didn’t like our boss that demanded we have fresh coffee for him every morning. We made it with a bit of hydraulic fluid added to the grounds. Over heard him complaining to his boss that he went to sick call because he has had the shits for two months. And he thought he was an asshole

For those that haven’t been on a carrier, they put the potable water in the jet plane fuel tanks, so the drinking water always tasted and had some oil floating on top.

Too funny! On my last ship, USNS Wyman, there was a pinhole leak in a Diesel line and we had Diesel flavored water everywhere. In the coffee it floated on top, so you could sort of skim it off with a napkin or spoon. In the shower there was no getting away from it. Take a shower and come out oily and stinking of Diesel. Took almost a year for the snipes to find it.
