I've been running a Wix 51515 since I got my Jeep. This is the second time in a row now that I've had a filter bend / indented filter. Anyone else have similar issues with oversized filters on the 4.0L?

I've got a new Napa 1515 ready to put on, if It turns out like the other ones then I'll have to go smaller.

Go back to MOPAR my man!

Are they denting when you try to take it off to change the filter? What type of filter wrench are you using if any?

No, they just become dented out of no where.

Wix makes the NAPA Gold filters.

Yeah I know. I'm kinda nervous about having installed it now. Doesn't look like this is a very common issue, so I figured I'd throw the situation out there and see if it's happened to anyone else o.0

Wow! That is weird. Never has happened to me, but I use the stock 1085 size Napa Gold filter.

If it is dented out of no where, that is a sign of "vacuum" effect from the inside.
That means it is bad.
x2 dented as in concaved?

Question: does oil get pushed or pulled through the filter? My presumption is pulled.

Here's a pic.. the concaved sections were facing upwards FWIW...

That is definitely a sign of a "vacuum" effect.
There might be a check valve (back-flow prevention) that is not working.
That will deprive your flow & pressure and will hurt your lube system in the long run.

Imagine like an asthma for a human breathing... somehow somewhere it will wear you out.

Some intricate filtration/lubrication system has the bypass system, some have a back-flow system, others has an RV pressure relief, some has a straight full flow in them, others have venturi. All oil pumping and filtering has delta-P in the system. It means that in theory, pressure IN is not equal to pressure OUT.

The more intricate a system is, the more complicated the trouble shooting is.

So the answer is "it depends". Jerry B. is an expert of TJs. Unfortunately I could not explain sh*t to simplify things :(

Was it the same kind of filter both times, did you use the same kind of filter before these two? You could cut the filter open and check for failure of the element that could have plugged the filter.

I saw a write up a while back about using larger oil filters then what was originally on 4.0. At that time I questioned if filter was for a different vechile would it have proper back flow valve etc. I would go back to a filter designed for your motor I have a 6.0 liter gmc truck kit takes a filter about 1/4 size of tj however that’s what engineers have designed to be optimum for that motor with proper oil changes maintenance etc If you do your part use a good oil ,proper filter change regularly I am shure a OEM size filter will be sufficient

I agree, OEM is what's best for these 4.0L and older engines.
They are like farm equipments in comparison. Tolerance is wide open.

I've been running a larger filter since having seen dirt in the banks air tube. When I bought my Jeep there was about an inch of mud everywhere, I checked everything but the inside of the air tube though when I bought it (made the seller drive to a car wash).

I've had what I thought to be a lifter tick when the motor is very cold (started when I originally ran 5w30 synthetic, using T5 10w30 now). I guess it's time to break out the stethoscope and put on the proctologist gloves

This is the only other explanation I've seen on a collapsed filter other than a failed bypass valve. I don't know if it's accurate, I've never even heard of this happening before.
