I actually broke the news to my wife today, and she said the same thing. She remembers all the things I did to my other two Jeeps. She is not happy, but basically said do what you want.

Where in FL? We have a place in Sarasota. There are some good trails in the Ocala area. We will be moving permanent when I retire in a few more years.

An '04 TJ Rubicon is a great year and model, it's what I drive and it's been great. That it's an automatic is even better, that really helps it on more difficult trails like I enjoy. And I really didn't seriously get into offroading until I hit 50 and I turn 76 in August.

This is me and mine, I'm 75 in this photo. I was out rock crawling at my "Last Hurrah" desert/rock crawling run in SoCal before retiring to Florida this past May... where there is no effing wheeling. Note the name of my TJ just above the round yellow decal, that decal was made for me by a fellow Jeeper and I love it.(Geezer 1 was stolen 12 years ago)

I took it for a Test drive today, drastic change is right. I’m used to almost 400 hp. I forgot how slow a TJ is. But it sure felt right.

Man, be very careful if it's been undercoated on the frame. That crap is used to hide all kinds of sins.....
Make sure you know what you're looking at.....
And if you do end up getting it I would get rid of all that undercoat crap. It’ll end up just aiding rust in the long run
I'm 25 miles south of Jacksonville in Fleming Island, next to Orange Park. I had no ideas there were good trails near Ocala, I just moved here in May from SoCal which was Mecca for awesome Jeep trails.
First- this is the forum you need to be on if you own or are considering buying a TJ. And yes, you can daily it- it is written in the Forum Handbook under “The TJ as a Daily Driver- Now you can take the really long way home”
Second- age matters none- I got one at 52 because I was getting older and heard the clock ticking. Time waits for no one. Plus at 50 you can actually afford it. These do need attention, and that cost some money. I had Jeeps when I was in my teens and 20’s, and cool is still cool. Actually my TJ makes me feel 21 sometimes.
Third- get a Rubicon.
Fourth - the wife. I’m an expert so trust me completely. If she is not going to be mad, get a Jeep. Then you will have a jeep.
If she is going to be mad, get a jeep. She will be mad, and you will have a Jeep.
When a woman says do whatever you want, she usually means “you obviously don’t care what I think, so I’m not going to fight this”. This is a huge win for married prospective Jeep buyers.
My wife said she didn’t like it....but every nice saturday at about 11 o'clock she was dressed for fun and crawling in it - no joke. I know one guy that got one and the next day his wife was up at 5-30 wanting to go get donuts in it. She may end up driving it more than you. That means getting two jeeps.
Avoid serious rust.

Those trails may not even bump the needle with what you are used to, but I bet you can find some fascinating places down there Jerry. It’s a neat ecosystem. A fishing rod might stay in mine all the time too.

Like others have said. Be very careful that undercoating is a red flag in my eyes.
Heck the dealer could have applied it. Never trust a used car salesman.
Inspect the inside of the frame by the skid plate and at the low points by the front and rear control arms very carefully. . These frames are notorious for rusting from the inside out. Stick you fingers in the frame holes. Again a boroscope will save you from any future headaches.

So a clean looking frame on the outside may be brittle inside. A NE Jeep with no rust is extremely rare, Also if your mechanic friend doesn't know TJ's he may not be aware of the frame rot issue.
This is why you get the Rubi….I’ve spent a couple years turning mine into a Rubi, but without the transfer case.
And don’t listen to these guys that have had 3 wives, you don’t go behind their back….you become a Better Salesman!
And IF that doesn’t work you go the boogie man’s way!
When you can sell you end up with 3….

So my wife has cousins that live in Reddick, which is just north of Ocala. Husband took me kayaking down the silver springs river. He pointed out some dirt roads and we saw quite a few muddy trucks and jeeps in the area. I assume they are out there in the woods. By the way, kayacking down the silver springs river was awesome. Manatees swimming underneath you, monkeys in the trees. Yes Monkeys. Supposedly they originated there after they shot the Tarzan movies or shows back in the 50s.
There is a lot of land in the interior of Florida, I’m sure you can find some off road fun. No rocks though. Lol
