Over here there was some discussion about a ring seal between the exhaust manifold and the down-pipe. Seems that perhaps only early years had one?

My 97 FSM shows one, but it must have been lost when a shop replaced the manifold years back.

Anyone know more about this part, what it was made of, and whether I should use one when I replace my exhaust system soon?

EDIT: While looking up the torque to replace my down-pipe, I found in the FSM where it specifies that the gasket/seal is only for the 4.0. I suppose that explains why my manifold’s bolts were far too short to accommodate one between the manifold and down-pipe.

Interesting...I would have thought that at least in terms of standardizing parts that the down pipe back would all be the same. Basically use the same donut seal as the 4.0. Same flange off the manifold. Obviously not the correct assumption.
