Morryde Tailgate Reinforcement Kit and Poison Spyder Corner Guards

I already have the Morryde Tailgate Reinforcement Kit installed:

and recently picked up some Corner Guards from Poison Spyder and am wondering what the best way to do the install would be. I read on a thread that Mr. Blaine did this for another member with Savvy Corners but I believe that was carrying 33s and the Saavy corners are a bit different than the PS.

Has anyone installed these type of short corner guards with the Morryde kit?
Did you remove the included backing plate for the tub?
Is it better to trim the corner guard around the Morryde backing plate?

Any insight or experience is appreciated.

Post pics of these Poison Spyder corner guards.

When installing the Savvy tub rails with the ExoGate hinges, the rail on the hinge side needs to be shortened and a new hole in the corner armor needs to be added.

The large ExoGate support plate between the body and hinges is not used with corner armor. Tire size is not relevant in this endeavor.

This is my ExoGate with Savvy corner armor. But no tub rails yet.

Posted pictures. It looks like if I remove the backing plate on the tub, the hinges should fit in notched out areas of the corner guards.

If I am understanding you correctly JJ, there is no concern about damage to the tub from the weight of the tail gate and spare if the backing plate is no longer in use? The corner guard will provide the same support that the backing plate provides? Just want to make sure. Thanks.

Those are a different category of corner armor than what mine are. Mine are not cut out for the gate hinges. This allows my corners to take the place of the ExoGate baking plate. I would not use the Poison Spyder corners and the ExoGate together without the full backing plate from the ExoGate. In which case, the two products appear to not be compatible.

I ask, because I would have just got the Saavy guards, but they are not available and therefore went with the PS.

Or is there another corner guard option that would work with the bigger hinges and backing plate?

Think through what the ExoGate backing plate is intended to accomplish. It is meant to bridge the upper and lower hinge mounting points together and spread the load of the hinges across a larger surface area and transfer some of that up to the C-pillar.

With a full corner like Savvy, the hinges attach to the corner material. The corner material is attached to the entire rear quarter of the body. In the case of Savvy, this is about 15 fasteners.

The structural reenforcement of the ExoGate backing plate is far exceeded by the full corner armor. I am unsure of the value of the C-pillar bracing at this point. But I still use it.

With an understanding of what the ExoGate backing plate accomplishes, you can use that to cut up what you have or select a different corner armor that is more conducive to using the ExoGate.

In my opinion, there are big compromises to cutting up either the PS corner or the EG plate that would motivate me towards not using one or the other. But some of that is predicated on my want of corner armor that I can use as corner armor.

For starters, one that does not have cutouts for the gate hinges. After that, find something that satisfies your corner armor needs in material, coverage and quantity and placement of attachments.

I am running Genright Alum corners and I did have the backing plate until Blane said it was not needed with the corners. So I took it off and saved a few lbs, it been off for 2 years and no issues. I am also running 35’s

Pretty straight forward not hard if you have a second hand. The only small issue is matching them to rock sliders, who's sliders are you using ?

Sliders will not be an issue (with the current setup). I have "sliders" that are mounted between the frame and body mounts/ lift pucks. I know they are not the best, but my wife and mom have enough problems getting into the Jeep as is, so I have no immediate plans to upgrade to real sliders that are tub mounted right now. Always thinking about it and probably will at some point, just trying to figure out how to help my mom get in without the current steps that are maybe 2.5" inches lower that it would be with tub mounted sliders with a step. (My Jeep is my DD, so this is a bit more of a concern than if it were only a trail rig).

I have seen a few people out on the trails use a removable stirrup that they hook over the door sill. May do something like this at some point, just not a big fan of always having to pull it out when needed and then haul it around.

With that said, what sliders work well with them? Genrights only?

If you are mixing and matching, you may need to address the gap or overlap. If you can't install both the sliders and the corners at the same time, then you need to install the sliders first to establish the height of the corners.

That is exactly the issue, if you use Genright Sliders no problem. I had Poision Spyder sliders so I had a small area that was not covered. I had to make a small piece to fill in, once done it is to noticible.

It can't be needed since the full corner armor does a better job.
