Different alternators for different years?

I’m about to swap my engine out for the one I’ve been rebuilding for a few months now. My question is that I have two different alternators. One from a 97 ( my original) and one from a 00 model. The newer one has different wiring so I’m not sure it will work without splicing wires or maybe more. I’ve read that the newer style has something different with the voltage regulator setup but I don’t have a clue. Anyone have any feedback?

Older used a external voltage regulator. Newer uses the PCM to regulate output.

Everything from 1991 YJ/XJ and onward is PCM regulated. 97-99 and 00-06 use very different models of alternators but both are PCM regulated.

I would suggest stick to the alternator type you have, since the two are quite different in their hookup. Why do you have a random one from a 2000?

Yea one has a two prong plug and a lug for a wire and the other has 5 lugs
