I've been keeping an eye out for a truck the past few months. As much as I love my Jeep, I'm not driving that thing 8 hours to and from school a few times a year for the next 3 years. I've been mainly looking at first gen Tacomas, but holy shit are they expensive. Who is paying $12k for a truck with 300k miles on it?

Have Taco prices been pretty consistent like this for the past few years or are they like TJ prices and just gone nuts the past 2 years or so?

Tacomas, Pretty constant In value retention- bought mine 2015 for approx 30k new - sold last year for 29k with a 110k miles. It was no longer stock, off-road paint brush marks down the side.

As a commuter I would look for something more economical-my wife’s got better gas mileage on the highway than the Tacoma or stay with the 4cyl variety. If your not being to hung up on the aftermarket support try looking at the frontier?

That's kinda what I assumed unfortunately.

I'm mainly just looking for something I can still wheel with while I'm at school and also fit climbing gear, fly fishing gear, etc. Preferably something that can make it up some big passes that the Jeep definitely struggles on. Tacoma or Toyota Pickup seemed the most reasonable to me based off that criteria. I don't have a lot of experience with the Frontiers. Everyone I know with light trucks like that has Tacomas or Tundras. Definitely need to just keep looking and see if anything pops up in the next year.

My sister-in-law paid 20k for an 05 last year with sub-100k miles for my nephew. I think that's absurd, but, not my money. I've driven several Tacomas and never like any of them. The newer ones I like the least. But that's just me.

You might have better luck with a T-100 or first gen Tundra. They seem to be a little bit cheaper than Tacomas. My first pickup was a 2001 S10 ZR2. A quick torsion bar crank and a set of 32's and that was a fun and capable little truck. The 4.3 is a great engine. Might be worth consideration.

Yeah definitely still need to actually drive one. Everyone I know with one loves them, but I have no idea what they're like compared to a Wrangler.

I always forget that the T-100s exist. The first gen Tundras I've seen are only marginally cheaper than the Tacomas, in Colorado at least.

More of a truck than a TJ is ;)...

Long term I'd love to get a real truck like an F-350 that I could put a camper on on and trailer the TJ with. But for now I just want a grocery getter truck to get me through college.

My LJ is going to try to pretend to be a truck if my upcoming elk hunting trip is successful... I'd happily take a taco.

Dave Chappelle's (IG dirthead_dave) cameraman (IG camhootch) was selling a sweet first gen Tundra that they put together on Dave's YouTube. I imagine it's already sold but I remember thinking the price seemed reasonable.

Cheap Tacomas all over.

Stay away from the stealerships

These have held ~30% roughly of their value
Very low miles for their years too

2008 , 4 door, 92K $11,900

2009, 4 door, 90K $11,900
https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/105624609471138$25K in 2008 is ~$35K in 2023
So those asking prices are likely $10,500 sale prices

Just about 3 years ago I bought a 98 Taco 4x4 X cab, in nice condition with 195K from the original senior owner. I paid $4200 for it. About a year later a buddy offered my $6500 for it, I sold it. He kept it for less than a year and sold it for $9000. That guy later listed it for $11,900 IIRC and it disappeared from C/L after a few weeks. At that point it has 211K miles on it. Would I pay $10K for it now...F no. Shit has gotten outta hand with prices. Just wait till the strike sets in 100% and I'll bet it will get far worst.

My TJ constanty breaks. If its not breaking its acting like it wants to. Plus the gas mileage is worse than a Tacoma if thats possible. I had my Tacoma Prerunner for 250K with only a trans rebuild. Most people dont daily an old Jeep unless your a kid

I am w/you bb. I stepped down from a Ram 1500 double cab. Kids had their cars didnt need it and didnt use the bed that much. Bought a 2019 taco, took 6 months for me to get used to getting into it. I really didnt like as much as I wanted to. Older in life, actually same bday as the OP ; ). Any who, drove by the toy dealer last year and saw a great looking 4Runner prem. What a difference, it reminded me of 05 suburban I had. Felt so much better, heavy vehicle and mpg is like the TJ. Work from home so, little mileage on the taco, worked out well.

I get the taco, eveyones needs are different. Your going to pay for it. A lot depends on how well it was taken car of.

Being in the Denver metro area probably doesn't help. Used car prices right now in general seem pretty high and people definitely like their Tacomas and 4runners here. But I've spent a lot of time on Craigslist and have only seen a handful of low mileage ones under $12k and maybe 2 under $10k and they were far from clean.

I had an ‘07 Taco TRD off-road I bought new. It was a great truck; very reliable.
I sold it in 2018 to buy my Ram 2500, which I like much better. With the Cummins manual it gets better mileage than the taco (albeit diesel) and has so much more room & comforts for all purposes (except city parking!)
And of course now I have the TJ too for messing around off-road, wrenching and having fun.
Other than the value retention (growth actually!) I don’t miss the taco. They have no soul. They’re extremely practical, but a bit small and boring. Great trucks; just not for me anymore.
