My daughter 98 Tj 4.0 is leaking. This part is under the hood, passenger side, coming from the cabin direction. Why would it be leaking from here? I don’t know enough to research until I can figure out what it is.

thats the condensation drain from your a/c- heater core box. it should drain like that if you run the a/c . also will drip antifreeze if your heater core has a leak. clear water is fine, antifreeze is bad !
ill go put a paper towel to it to check color. I was thinking it was clear but it was a little dark out. Her coolant looked low so my mind was kinda thinking and hoping not the heater core. I don’t see a puddle on her her passenger floor. Nice tj. Same as hers.
So I put a paper towel to it and it does look clear. However we are in MA so she definitely wasn’t using the air conditioner last night when driving. If anything she would have been using the heater. This leak just started And wasn’t there during the summer. I doubt she ever used the air conditioner this summer since she had it stripped down.
it also is the drain for the box located under the vents, it fine and normal. take a hose and pour water in the vents fwd of your windshield and water will pour out of that tube
Thanks. I’m her first go to for veh problems so I’m trying to learn as much as I can while our Jeeps anger us (But we love them). we’ve had rain the last couple days. Would this be the reason it’s suddenly causing a puddle under car when it didnt do before. I did check with her. She didn’t use the air conditioner and said her heat works fine.

If she ran the windshield defogger, that runs the AC to pull the moisture out of the cab and will produce condensate for that drain.
The heater core gets flow whether the heater is on or not so for a heater core to start leaking right when the heating season starts would be pure coincidence.
I'm sitting here and 2nd guessing myself, don't both the HVAC box and cowl both drain out that hose ?
I know either one being clogged can put water in your passenger floor but I always assumed they would be separate; I've never had reason to mess with my cowl drains so I don't actually know.
Most likely draining from keeping it on defrost since it uses the AC to dry out the cabin. Its been quite wet here in the Northeast lately with all the rain and I've used my defrost more lately than I have in the past.
However, I would still keep an eye out on the coolant and check the drain often especially when not using the defrost.

Cowl should drain down the middle where the big flat cowl drain is located right behind the valve cover.
So would a clogged cowl drain affect it. I actually had that thought too since I pulled a bunch of leaves out of her air filter box. that thing is probably full. I’m grabbing my tools from work in a bit so I can change her idler pully and belt so I might as well check that too.
That’s possible. She probably did use her defrost.
The cowl drain and the drain tube for the condensation tray in the bottom of the HVAC box under the dash are not connected by anything the factory did.

yea, that was my bad. I thought I remembered the water draining out that tube when I washed mine out but it was a while back.
Also, all cars do it.
More noticeable on a jeep because they sit higher.
