Yes....but only true if the console/lid is original to your vehicle and the original cylinder was swapped.
Not sure if it is "supposed to" but mine does.
I think it would be counterintuitive to use a different key for it, similar to the older passenger airbag. Those also use the ignition key. The only time i have heard of needing seperate keys was when half doors are keyed differently from the ignition. I believe even then it is correctable.

I don't have the right key for mine.
Anyone have a source for the cylinder or I probably should pop it out and take it to a locksmith.

My door key won't go in all the way. I'll try a few drops of Tri-Flow and if that doesn't work I may remove it and take it to a locksmith. Finding a brick and sticks locksmith shop is not so easy though.
I usually have so much dust in mine after Moab that it is really stubborn. I'd treat it just like a door lock. Degreaser, then work it with the key just in and out till you get it to lock and unlock, then add some kind of oil that will keep it from wearing the metal down.
Just go to Google Maps and type in "locksmiths near 'whatever city you are in' ". I did it for Flagstaff and found 7 locksmiths in 2 seconds. Good luck!
BTDT, almost all of them come up with a street address but it is their house and they work mobile out of a van.
So I removed the lock which is super easy, only a single brass Torx-15 screw. I cleaned it out and re-lubed with Tri-Flow and it now works. It's a little finicky but I can get it to work. One thing I didn't realize is that the key doesn't go all the way in, the cyl is too short for that.
