Hey all!

The project has come a long way since my last thread on getting the highway speed vibrations out of the way, and I was able to ride out the 9 hour drive to Death Valley in comfort to take on Goler Pass and a few other 4WD trails + back country camping.

That was all well and good, but on the trail I ended up busting out the axle-side shock mount, tearing the other one in half, and damaging both of the rear shocks in the process.
Things got worse when that little break-up sliced through both the fuel send and return lines on the driver-rear side; not what I was looking for on the trail! Some quick fixes later I was able to complete the pass trail but I have some investigation to do to figure out what happened.

1) The previous owner installed a 4" ProComp lift that I've been going through and replacing with adjustable parts and getting things dialed in. I think the culprit here for the shocks were these little lower shock mount perch extenders that moved the mounting location of the shocks 2" backwards away from the axle. I've since removed these and welded the shock mounts back onto the axle. In my testing, a fully compressed shock was as shorter than the bump-stop distance, so I'm confused as to why the shock was axle to break the mount.

2) looking under the body I'm noticing that the rear axle is contacting a few things; there are scuffs on the exhaust manifold and there are scuffs where the track bar adjustment collar is contacting the underside of the tub. I rotated the adjustment collar to clear thing but I'll need to do a swing test to make sure. I have adjustable RLCAs and RUCAs and I'm guessing that during the rear axle positioning that the axle is set too far backward. the tires are also rubbing the back end of the fenderwells like crazy while on the trail.

I'll use this post to track the progress of the hunt, and if you have any suggestions on solid ways to test for the above I'd be happy to hear them!

Torn rear shock mounts always make me question whether the rear shocks were simply too long and bottomed out hard and often enough to tear the lower mounts off.

And it's hard to see what's happening with the rear track bar. Can you take another photo from a little further away? Are you certain it's not flipped 180 so its bend is not in the wrong position?

That's what I was thinking; I purchased a set of Rancho RS5000X (RS55256) for the rear, which to their specs say work for TJs with about a ~3.5" lift. If anything, I figured they might have been too short!

Here are images of the bar.

With the insufficient fender clearance for your rear tires I would not bet on you having anywhere near a 3.5" suspension lift. It's clear now your shocks are too long for your suspension height and the cause of the torn off shock bracket. Not to mention Rancho's lift height guidance for their shocks is notoriously incorrect and will often (usually, in my experience) give shocks that are too tall for the suspension lift that they show.

Measure your rear spring height with the tires on the ground. Stock spring height is 8" tall, anything over 8" is your suspension lift height. Please tell us what your rear spring height measures. Stock front springs are 12" tall, anything taller than that is suspension lift height.

My PO put a 4" ProComp lift on my TJ. Been slowly replacing parts. I gained two inches of actual lift replacing the ProComp springs with Currie 4".

Nice job getting off the trail! What did you use to patch the fuel lines?

I keep in my recovery gear box a 2' section of 1/4, 1/2, and 3/4 hose and an assorted box of hose clamps - slip them over and cranked em down. got me all the way back home!

also that is.... not something I had previously considered within the realm of possibility. If I in actuality have a 2" instead of a 4" lift I've got a lot of things in the wrong places lmao

This is assuming the vehicle is unladen / with a factory weight tire on the carrier correct?

I currently have installed a very heavy drawer/kitchen system + a 35 on an aftermarket carrier, which may compress things a bit more than usual. I will measure and report.

Well you really need to pull the springs and shocks and articulate everything and see what hits where and fix it... adjustable control arms sometimes...bump stops maybe.

Once that's done you can measure travel and that let's you select shocks.

Or you can just throw parts at it and break things. Exactly what I just did. Took off my stock control arms that were really limiting travel for Savvy. Hit a railroad crossing on a test cruise into town and blew my rear shock.

While we are on the subject.... I'm reading that Currie springs (sold by rockjock) should be a good set to get things to where they need to be. I've already got the adjustable control arms for the rear and I've read that you can just get by with a tummy spacer (which I already have from the PO) until I can get that driveshaft and SYE handled.

+ 2x Rancho RS5000X (RS55256) replacements

Anyone need anything else while I'm at the store?

OP you should post some more pics of stuff like your control arms and front suspension. That track bar does not look like Pro Comp and neither does the one control arm I can see.
