EV thread

I'll just chime back in here after getting our July, NON-EV electric bill in SOCAL, for a 1,400 SF multi-level condo, with a 2 year old HVAC system and a NEST t-stat with ECO settings and a pretty aggressive schedule (although my wife wants it to be 72° in the house and we also have an electric stove...). We also use LED lamps almost exclusively.

Any guesses?

Y'all can take your EV's and shove them straight up your asses!

We pay $0.33/kWh (up to 1,376 kWh - Tier 1).
We pay $0.42/kWh (above 1,376kWh - Tier 2).

We typically run right at or near the Tier 1 limit already, so I can only imagine the usage if we also charged an EV.

At $70K+ for an electric vehicle, another $3.5K for the home charger, and $0.42/kWh for power to charge it, we would be broke in no time.

I'll say it again, Y'all can take your EV's and shove them right up your asses!

Here are our crappy summer rates. in the winter, the more we buy, the cheaper it gets. If I had an electric heat pump the rates are even lower. Sorry for your CA issues.

The Volt is not a Bolt. The Volt was a plug in - battery first hybrid - much like a diesel locomotive works. You got around 30 miles on pure battery then it went hybrid like a Prius. Plug it in at work, plug it in at home and never use gas if your commute is less then 60 miles round trip. But you had gas when you needed it. I got about 7000 miles on a 7 gallon tank of fuel. Mine was a great car and super reliable.

Yes it has a screen on the infotainment system, and yes the gauges are digital. You could tape cardboard over the infotainment and the dash and use a wind sock or a pitot tube to determine speed if you wanted to.

The Bolt is a small EV. 100% battery. Pretty inexpensive for a commuter car and had a decent range.

The Smart car is something you've seen for sure - they are those insanely tiny two seater cars that are stupid in our big car culture.

I've seen Smart cars for sure - actually two of my dance sisters owned them. But I'm not at all familiar with their EV versions.

But seriously it's not apples to apples, while I'm in a larger place (2400 sf single), I live alone with no women & children running every appliance 24/7, and I thug it out in summer with no air, it's just not important to me, I'm chilled at the office so when I get home I prefer Tarzan mode. I will say however when I ran the air around the clock at peak swamp ass July/August temps & humidity it pushed my bill up around $100, I think the largest bill I ever saw was around $170+/-.

On the flip side I'll add that I'm on well water, so every time I draw a drop of water the well pump kicks on & dims the lights from the power that thing draws. Kidding about the lights, but it is the single greatest unavoidable power suck in my house.

Shopping for his first family car, Yuan, a 31-year-old Shanghai resident, test-drove pure electric vehicles from Nio and Xpeng, popular EV brands in China. But he was worried about running out of juice and the hassle of charging his car on the go. So instead he tried something new: an extended-range electric vehicle, or EREV. They can go more than 600 miles on a charge compared with the typical 300, thanks to a small internal combustion engine on board whose sole purpose is to automatically recharge the battery. An EREV turned out to be the perfect fit, and in May he paid about $34,000 for a Li Auto L6, a five-seat sport utility vehicle that’s become one of the hottest-selling models in China.

“I had not thought about buying an EREV before,” says Yuan, who wanted to be identified only by his first name over concerns about his government job. “But we won’t have to worry about driving range in case of occasional longer drives or the long queue for charging ports.”

Extended-range EVs have become the fastest-growing propulsion system for cars in China, the world’s largest market for pure battery electric vehicles. Sales of EREVs more than doubled there over the past year and now account for 30% of the country’s plug-in hybrid sales, according to research service Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF). They will begin arriving in America next year when Chrysler-parent Stellantis NV rolls out the Ramcharger, an EREV version of its Ram 1500 pickup truck that it says will have a 690-mile driving range and is being “built to pull an entire skeptical demographic” into the electric age.

As automakers worldwide struggle to persuade mainstream car buyers to go electric, EREVs are emerging as a solution to the two biggest roadblocks to EV acceptance: price and range anxiety. An EREV can be charged by plugging in, like a conventional EV, but it also can be filled with gas to power a small gasoline engine that charges the battery as the car rolls along, dramatically extending how far it can go. Rather than powering the wheels the way it does for a conventional automobile or hybrid, the EREV’s gas engine acts only as an on-board generator. This means extended-range EVs require a battery only about half the size of a traditional EV, which lops about $4,000 off the price of an EREV versus a pure-electric vehicle. And with the engine automatically topping up the battery, long trips don’t have to be interrupted by stops to plug into roadside charging stations.


“It has a smaller battery, 95% of the trips are going to be all electric, and then you don’t have range anxiety,” Jim Farley, chief executive officer of Ford Motor Co., said in late May after returning from a trip to China, where EREVs wowed him. “We really like that solution.”

Because EREVs run on battery power most of the time, they are more environmentally friendly than conventional hybrids, such as the Prius that Toyota Motor Corp. has sold for more than a quarter-century. Conventional hybrids are driven by a gas-fueled internal combustion engine supplemented by a small electric motor that’s charged by the car’s electrical system and kinetic energy captured when the driver applies the brakes. EREVs emit less global warming carbon dioxide because their gas engines run only periodically to recharge the battery. But whereas an EREV’s battery is smaller than a full electric vehicle, it’s larger than the power pack found in a conventional hybrid. That makes EREVs more expensive than conventional hybrids.

What a fucking concept. Like its something new - but it does make more sense in a lot of use cases. Now - can you get one without a pile of bullshit "technology"?
