I've always had the impression that it was the artistry in the paintwork

I've seen that car in person a few times over the years, pretty sure I've mentioned that before. The detail in the paint work is crazy, but the lowrider crowd is known for some crazy paint work, some good, some bad, some insanely detailed. Gypse Rose has been painted on a few times, and I think they claim the car has something like 25 layers on it. I'm thinking at least a dozen are clear.

"Gypse Rose" is actually the second car bearing this name, built by the same guy. IIRC, he built the first one ('63 Impala) and painted it pink with some roses. I think he said this was done because his mother or girlfriend/wife liked roses. A local (LA area) gang or rival car club had issue with it and destroyed the car. The owner came back with the '64 and created the current Gypse Rose with a ton of flowers. It won some big lowrider show and made history.

I hate the interior, but I really don't mind the exterior.

Yeah, she predates all that nonsense. I believe fans of the lowriders knew she was special even "back in the day". Something that I wasn't aware of until recently, however, is that this '64 is actually his third rendition of Gypsy Rose. The first two were '63s. The first one was painted a flashy pink, sans the roses. I don't know whatever became of it, but the second one (which reportedly had 72 roses painted on it) was destroyed by a rival gang. The third and final rendition of the car...a '64...has 115 flowers on it. She's a looker!

Ha, I read this after I posted above. I was thinking it was his second car, but maybe it was his third. I do remember some local rival gang or car club bashed his '63 until it was sent to the junkyard.

With Lacquer paint you could have , ( and want ) 25 coats of paint . But as a side note , have you ever seen a 64 grill this straight ? Beautiful !

Includes wheels, I think they meant includes tires. I've seen a few Earl Scheib paint jobs and they paint everything. I have read if you did the masking, and minimal prep, the quality wasn't too bad.

The definition of quality varies as much as people do, but it is not a word I would use do describe the numerous Scheib and Maaco jobs I've witnessed.

I remember the Earl Scheib shop a few blocks from where I grew up. They had a huge sign with $29.95, which crept up every couple of years.

I absolutely remember those ads! A guy I worked with (Scott Sumita...R.I.P.) took his '72 Caddy Coupe DeVille in to have them paint it. The price by that time had risen to $119, but he still figured it was a bargain. Yup...a screamin' deal for a mint-green metallic paint job that included painting the vinyl top, as well as the single oak leaf that was laying on the hood (I shit you not!), all at no extra charge!

They had a baking booth with dozens of IR lamps. You could see that red glow from a block away on winter evenings. I always wondered how hot it got in there, and what it did to tires and other plastic/rubber parts.

Judging from some of their paint jobs, I'd say they were actually "grow lights" during the off-hours...

I remember talking with a painter at a reputable body shop about Sheib's prices, and he said that they must get their paint in 50-gallon drums...

Maybe one or two, but none chromed...

A couple of years ago I was keeping an eye out for a good grill to replace the damaged one in my convertible. Well, I must have done something right because "the universe" seemed to reward me. I think I have 5 now, and I paid an average price of $50. I found them all at non car events, paying $60 for the first one, and $40 for the last one. Now I either have two spares for each car, or I need to buy some more '64 Chevies to go behind the extra grills.

Funny thing, at least to me, when I picked up that last $40 one from an antique peddler at an antique event, I walked maybe 100 ft and found another one hanging from bungy cords. I asked the guy how much, and he said he just bought it for his car, not for sale. I asked him how much he paid, and let's just say I was shocked. (more than 10X what I paid) I had sent mine with someone else, so I didn't even mention that I just found one near him for $40. No need to make a grown man cry.

According to Wikipedia, Scheib had its own paint manufacturing business. They even sold paint to other industries. Who knew?
