2029 Wrangler

I have the same opinion of both: Completely stupid, useless, and pointless.

I'm with you, 100%. I remember my Motorola StarTac back in 2000. That was enough for all of us!

I bough my first cell phone in 1989, a Panasonic "Bag phone". I used it until the G1/analog turnoff in 2007. I'd still be using it if that hadn't happened. No battery worries and incredible range. Used it a few times offshore, could hit a shore based cell tower from 30 miles out!

Have you seen these?

I've been considering buying them. I always remember how much I loved my Nextel push-to-talk phone in the early 2000s.

Hmmmm - maybe worth a thought. My current phone has PTT capability, although I've never had a need for it. But the "connect to ANY cell service" sounds interesting, need to look at it some more.

They're not completely free. There's a yearly fee of $50, though that's not that bad if you're using them.

Because we're using cellular data, we do incur costs. We cover those costs by charging $50/year per radio after the first year (the first year is included). That's an entire year of cellular service for what most people pay per month for their cellphones, AND you're getting access to ALL of the network providers at that price (not just 1). If they are going to be used out of the country, it would be $100 instead of $50 per radio for international.

And calling them a 'radio' is a stretch. They assume you will have cell coverage vs. a ham or GMRS that is a real radio and doesn't need a cell tower close by.

Takeaways:

  • square headlights
  • No V6 (non-turbo) option, only the possibility of the I6 Turbo in the Ram, which isn't selling well
  • IFS
Maybe just add a sliding side door and be done with it?

I got a '23 Ram 1500 about two years ago, so will have it for a while. The more I read about new vehicles, just makes me think my next vehicle is going to be used and earlier than 2020.

IMO, they need to take the wrangler and go back to a basic, simple vehicle with options to add all the additional electronic garbage. Then they need to make a vehicle that looks similar to the regular wrangler, but with IFS and all the extra BS that soccer moms like. I feel like especially during COVID, a lot of people bought wranglers to replace their minivans because they "looked cool", with absolutely 0 mechanical knowledge, then went and complained because it didn't ride as nice as their previous vehicle. no shit sherlock. Going this way just upsets everyone. The true enthusiasts essentially lose all the reasons they liked Jeep, and the people who just want to look cool are still not satisfied with the handling and ride characteristics because it's trying to straddle that line of minivan and offroader. just like a multifunction tool, the more things it does, the worse it is at them.

There ya go, that's the one I was after!

I can't decide which one I hate more though, the smart phone or social media. These days I lean towards the latter.

Social media. The problem is any retard can put their opinion online for thousands or millions to see. It can absolutely be a good tool, but it's terrible for your mental health if used wrong. Most people don't have the self control, so it turns into a cesspool.

Smart phones are an extremely powerful tool if used right. The problem is most large companies benefit from addiction to screen time, so again, without self control, they can be very very negative for you. And arguably, that can be muchly blamed on social media. People on their phone while driving? Likely doomscrolling or messaging. But the smartphone itself, with the ability note take, communicate, calculate, video, take photos, etc, is a massive timesaver.

We had a giant 3 day windstorm , 2 1/2 power outage , and of course the cell tower we need was down . These wouldn't solve anything for me.

You're contradicting yourself.

PHOOOOOONNEs do many things, few of them well.

I’ve been doing a lot of research on them and I’m impressed. I’ll probably end up buying a pair.

Contradiction? Let me lay it out simple. The phone, if used correctly, is an immensely powerful, efficient and capable tool. It can just as easily be used wrongly.

What you're doing is ignorance to it's capability. I fully understand how detrimental they can be if used wrongly, but the same could be said for guns, vehicles, ai, etc. Very powerful when used correctly, but can just as easily be used wrongly.

AND...

You're missing the point completely.

You were saying that in reference to the 2029 Jeep, and I quote "Just like a multifunction tool, the more things it does, the worse it is at them." The exact same thing applies to a PHOOOOOONNE. It can do many things, but few of them well. The detriment of the thing is a completely different - but valid - discussion.

Ok fair point, I did say that. Lets look at it realistically. There will almost always be some trade offs compared to a dedicated tool

Calls - No sacrifice
Text - No sacrifice
Email - Smaller display, takes longer to type than a keyboard. Benefit of viewing wherever, whenever.
Camera - Not as good as a dedicated, but enough for the average person. Phone or no phone, professionals typically have an actual camera.
Calculator - Just as good as a handheld
Web browsing - Smaller display, but convenience of it being accessible nearly anywhere at any time
Clock - Just as good, if not better.

Add in the fact it's like an unlimited yellow pages book and a many libraries at your fingertips, it is actually one of the few tools that can do many things well, while being more efficient and occupying less space. I could go on and on about the full capabilities of these things, but my point is that utilized properly, they allow us to do many things that we're not possible before. Those that are smart have used the saved time elsewhere and don't use social media;)

I'm not saying it's necessary or everyone should have one. Unfortunately, as these things become smarter, people become dumber because they take them for granted. With all the added conveniences of todays life, people become less competent.
