I am currently frame-swapping my whole 2001 Jeep TJ 4.0. I’m about to pull the motor out , and I was planning to turbo the motor when putting it back together onto the new frame. From what I’ve seen, you can run that much boost without head studs and a stronger head gasket. The engine has 89,000 miles on it, and nothing has been done to it before. I’m just trying to get others’ thoughts on this and see if I should upgrade the head studs and gasket, or just leave it as is while it’s out of the car.

Well if you want to do it right, upgrade the head studs and gasket. If you want to run lower boost then slap a turbo on and run a low psi.

It’s up to you. One way is the right way and the other way is the half-cocked way.

Read through @Jezza build thread https://wranglertjforum.com/threads/turbo-4-liter.49996/#post-880619

I may be way off on this, but I've seen a couple Youtube vids and you may be able to get away with around 5-8 lbs of boost before it starts becoming an issue with knocking? Either way, if you can spare the money, I think it'd be worth it to spend the money clamping the head down properly because it sucks having to go in after and redo that with a new gasket and studs.

How much?

Generally speaking, factory N/A engines can safely run up to 10 psi before finding issues. Keep in mind more boost = more heat. If you're turboing and pulling the head, it would be a good time to add a little ring gap for safety.

ok i think im going to do the studs and gasket, Has anyone had issues with transmision/driveline issues. Im 18 i don't want to say i drive it like i stole it but i do most of the time and want more power thats the main reason i want the turbo for more power. I just swaped a 350 small block in my friends Yj and want more power without spending 6 grand

Less than $6K will be a tight budget for turboing if you want reliable. Doable, but tight. Studs might not be within that budget, and honestly probably not needed. I think you need to do a lot more research. Go read through Jezza's stuff. Also, LS will likely be a better bang-for-the-buck. Again, I think you need to do a lot more research.

That's not even getting into what axle and gears you have. Doin this with a stock 35, she isn't going to last long.

ok will look into the ls and reasearch the turbo more

its got dana 35s and a 4" lift might take it off , It got 35s with steel wheels all new suspension components and steering i pretty much fully redoing it

I just did studs and head gasket that werent too expensive. Mine was pricey because I had to replace cam lifters and rockers. The cams for these things are getting hard to find even blanks for a custom grind are getting really hard. Someone on here turned me on to Newcomer racing.
