5.2 swap questions

This is AI so take it for what it's worth... But compatibility is these

  • Interchangeable Part Numbers: 56046343AA, 56046343AB, 56046343AC, 56046343AD, 56046343AE, 56046343AF, 56046343AH.
I went through 4 PCM's when I did my 5.2 swap before I found a good one.

I found a place on eBay that sells refurb ECUs and will put the TJ VIN into the ECU and makes sure no SKIM

My only issue with having the TJ's VIN programed into the PCM is when you hook a scanner to the rig..... Then it's still thinking it's either a 4 cyl or 6 cyl instead of being a V-8. It then just takes longer to get the scanner to diagnose things. If you have access to a truck even if you just got to a junkyard to get it that can make things easier.

If you can find a used one off Ebay to buy from a truck...

Well I got a few e-mails out on ECUs and another TJ harness.
I think tomorrow I'll pull the motor/trans harness & the TJ fuse box harness.

I'm going to start how I've read a few do now, and pin it to a sheet of plywood and start labeling every plug.
I get reading the pin out, still confused on the wiring diagrams in these late 90's FSMs, but I have the basics down.
I'm sure I'm far from done asking for help. This is the part that I feared the most knowing my Jeep was a mix of assemblies. But it's my last step.

I did up the frame, fixed cracks, full custom long arm, re-geared, repainted the body. And now the last step building out the harness. After that I'll prob share all I've been through in this build with a full build thread.

Side Bar: What I discovered is in my Jeep. it's a 98' TJ that was frame/body swapped to a LJ after a wreck. The motor was coil on plug, and the trans was a 3 speed auto. The motor harness once I dug into it was at least 3 different harnesses matted up. So the color codes were all over the place. So going back to basics with a "clean" TJ harness is best.

I'd talk with @Wranglerfix about ordering the right PCM. www.wranglerfix.com.

And I think there's a company out there that sells an engine swap harness.

A used harness is going to have some issues...if you're spending money I'd at least consider a new harness if you can source one.

I looked but can not find a new harness.
If you got a link or connection please share,

I'd love to find a new "pre-Built" harness for this swap but can't find one and Painless last I checked wants over $1000 to build one.

I spent weeks merging the harnesses. I have a lot of unorganized notes. My best advice, go slow, pin by pin, once you get past the idea of it being a unmanagable puzzle then it gets easier. it took me a few weeks. I used butt splices in some areas, the biggest thing is that it is yours and your ideas are what make it work. no one is coming after you to inspect. Go slow, ask questions but you can do it. mine has been going strong for 3 years now.

EDIT: I re-read where your harness was already a pieced together unit. I would at least find one that is unmolested! I would not try to use your current one

With a Donor TJ harness does it mater if it's 4.0 or 2.5?
I'm finding 2.5 harness's cheap..

And if my just "merging" stuff into the 5.2 harness does it mater?

A donor harness for the TJ is what I'm working on getting now.
It's the only "clean" way to start on this part.

To wrap my head around "Pin by Pin"
Do I lay it out, start at say C1, and follow that out to location?
And in doing that Move what needs moved?

Where I keep getting lost is in the wireing of the C103 & C104 - They seem so much different than the ZJ C131 & C132

Let me think....... I am not at home so I cant go to my notes to refresh my brain at the moment. but I used the 1998 Jeep Grand Cheeroke harness for the main harness. I took the Eng 5.9, transmission 46re and transfer case 242 and put in my 1997 TJ that was a 4 cylinder and manual transmission, so it made more since to use the GC harness.

Again I spent several days standing by each jeep and looking at the plugs and the print outs until it finally began to understand it. The wire color codes are different but the pins do the same functions.

I have a 98' TJ that was body/frame swapped with a 04' LJ and I'm now thinking my dash harness is a 02-04
Donor is a 96' ZJ.
This might be a bigger issue. TJ 97-00 I think are different than TJ 01-06. plus the older GC of 96 may not be compatable. which could be why the connectors are so different.

you might need a later model GC harness.

Anything your willing to share would be very helpful. I'm hoping to take what I learn and do and build a write-up for this harness build out.
Being there really isn't one.

My wiring is 98' TJ. The motor was the mess.
It was a spliced mash-up harness from what I can tell parts from 98, 00 & 02.
My TJ was totaled years ago and was built back with a LJ tub and 1/2 frame.

But my dash, and firewall harness after deep dig yesterday is 98'..

My donor rig is a late year 96' which per manuals is the same as 97' -98'.

In the ZJ 95' older is the different electrical.
ZJ's are 2 gens. 93-95 & 96-98 (I've owned many of both)

I don't think it would matter but am not 100% sure of that either. But I'd try to find a 98 harness.

It's been 3+ years since I'd built my new harness and I had my old one to cheat off of when I ran into issues. So I'm not sure about those plugs.
I had bought a early 97 4 cyl PDC harness & a 98 Ram truck harness to make my new blended harness.

The one that was made for me when I had the swap done the 1st time had issues so I'd wanted to start with a brand new harness.

Their harnesses are $$$$ but Chris does an awesome job with his harnesses and they are 100% worth what you pay for them. As much as I tried to make mine look nice it wasn't what I'd hope for.

I was going to do one too when I made my new harness and then never did....

As long as you can identify wire colors and can trace them out then that harness should be OK....

And keep asking questions.... There are enough folks here who can help out... I might not have a Magnum in my Jeep anymore but I did and liked it too....
On a side note: The 44RE you have can be built up to be stronger using 46RE parts I think... Again a lot of this info has disappeared off the internet over the past 10-20 years... Or my search fu is just poor...

Here is one that is still up:

https://www.magnumswap.com/

There are some Magnum swap pages on facebook also...

Only found 1 FB swap page and has been far from helpful.

I know the 44RE well as I've had and built many a ZJ in the last 20 years.

well I scored a ECU from a 98' RAM and a full TJ harness from a 98' 4cy . including the firewall harness as well.
Got to drive a few hours to go get them.
