Backlash is at .006
Still looks a little shallow to me but I need a sanity check at this point.

You're not shallow, you're actually deep. Take out 5 thou and let's see what it looks like.

Pulled 5 thou, backlash is at .007

When you put your pinion back in, how tight are you making the pinion nut? If you can (without the crush sleeve), put it at the torque spec you plan on using. 16-20 is what I shoot for, even during setup. It just allows for the most consistency.

The reason I ask is, your pattern is still showing shallow and I would've expected it to be just about right. Inconsistencies with other areas of the setup will leave you chasing your tail.

If everything has been consistent to this point, then go back to the setting in post #5 but open the backlash just a little

Ok, I will start checking it every time. When I checked it a pattern or two ago it was at 14.
Will do for the next set up, it may be a day or two, couple of 14 hour work days coming up.

Backlash is at .008, rotational resistance is at 18-inch pounds. Tried to check everything for better consistency.

That pattern reads very well. You are still just a touch shallow. We were on the right track before but your pattern want as clear as this one. This is going to sound like insanity, but add that 2 thou back in there. I'm not sure what your post #1 depth was, but it's in between the two now.

Whatever you did for this set up, repeat it with the additional 2 thou and try to leave your BL at 8 if possible.

It took a while to get the backlash and preload to work on this one but here it is.
Added .002 to the pinion.
Backlash is .008
Rotational resistance is 19-inch pounds.

These newer patterns by you are a LOT easier to read. Keep doing what you're doing.

You are very close now. I would add another 2-3 thou and see what happens. You're almost there. If you don't have the shims to make that kind of change, I would err on the side of slightly deep vs. slightly shallow. I think 2 is your number.

Way to stick with it. That's good to go. If you're absolutely bored, you could drop 1 thou and see what it looks like but I would have zero problem running the pattern you have. Good job sticking with it.

The attention to detail of setting it up consistently really showed through these last few changes. It really does make a difference.
