I doubt it still has emission equipment, but if it does, I bet that shit is fried. All I know about the truck is it's post 6.0 Power Stroke, sometimes runs, it's known to breakdown, not if but when, and it was high mileage when he bought it 6-7 years ago. I think he told me it had 350K when he got it. As often as it runs, it probably has 352K on it now, but hundreds of additional hours.

That's hard on the mechanicals, especially when cold. Also, your cold and my "cold" are probably a little different, so I might be more inclined to idle too if I lived in CO.

Probably a 6.4. the worst power stroke engine ever made, by a long shot. It's probably on it's 5th or 6th engine lol

Really? I have a little experience with a 6.0 PS, which everyone was hating on back then, but nothing newer. I remember people always hating on the 6.0 saying how weak and bad it was, but the F550 I drove around never had any real issues, it was just a picky bitch with the fuel system. I though the next engine was suppose to have fix all of the perceived short comings of the 6.0. My neighbor's truck is whatever replace the 6.0 PS, and I can tell you one thing, it's always broken. I remember last year he spent something like $8K on fixing it, got the truck back and the next day he broke down in the middle of a very busy 4-way intersection. I was home when the roll back dropped it off, again.

While I type this his truck has been MIA for the last 2-3 months. I assumed he wised up and sold or scraped it, but when I asked his kid about it last week, she said it's in the shop.

Yes, the 6.4 is even worse then the 6.0 lol (which is terrible). At least the 6.0 is relatively fixable, AFAIK there are no fixes to the piston cracking issue the 6.4s were having.

In fairness, if you "bulletproof" the 6.0, it's an EXCELLENT engine. Some people just give up on it too quickly. Granted, you shouldn't have to change a bunch of factory stuff on the engine to make it that way, but anyone who knows vehicles, knows that's not UNCOMMON.

The 6.4 on the other hand... There's just no redemption for that turd. The best way to solve your 6.4 problems is to replace it with literally anything that's not a 6.4.

If you pay close enough attention to the diesels, they have a cold weather idle program. They will kick themselves up off of idle if they start getting too cold or if the intake air is too cold for the PCM's liking.

My '06 Cummins does it all the time in the winter. I also flashed the PCM with my programmer to enable the idle up with cruise control. So I can hop in, let it do its thing and then I can manually kick the idle up to anything above 1000rpm by setting the cruise and tapping the accelerate or deceleration buttons.

Some of the better programmers and remote start kits will also accommodate an after run cool down timer.

I really need to get CC high idle enabled on my truck. It warms my heart to hear it start in the winter, if it's cold enough it will go straight to high idle. Sounds really good with a straight pipe lol

I figured the newer trucks would do something like that, but I've never heard the older trucks do it, and I've spent a lot of time with mid'90-mid'00 trucks. IIRC that's a work around for manual transmission owners??? but..... I think I also remember you can have a stealership (or someone with the ability to completely reprogram PCM with their own laptop) reflash the computer to allow it to be done so long as the park brake is set, whch leads to it's own potential issues in cold ass winter conditions...

Yes, that's correct I forgot it was manual only for the wiring. I think the dealer or a tuner has to turn it on before about 2006 ish

I can now enable and disable it with my tuner, but before I could do that I had to have Bully dog walk me through enabling it in the PCM through a bunch of key on/key off steps that involved a couple other things that I can't remember because it's been so long since I did it. It would have been far easier and faster had I just taken it to a local stealership and paid them the half hour "diagnostic fee" to reflash the computer enabling the feature in the PCM.
