I have a 1998 TJ 4.0, no lift on it with a SYE kit installed. Do I need rear adjustable control arms? Did the SYE change the pinion angle? Thanks for the help

Unless you have a CV drive shaft instead of the oem style, you wouldn't need adjustable control arms. Are you experiencing any vibrations from the drive shaft? Any photos of your setup?

When an SYE is installed, it not only gets rid of the slip yoke, but also usually means a longer drive shaft can be used to help eliminate vibrations. It's almost always installed with a CV drive shaft, which will look like the front drive shaft, with a CV joint at the transfer case end.

The kit came with a cv driveshaft. Long story, i’ll try to sum it up. I bought the Jeep about 2yrs ago. It was all stock with 30” tires. I have had a shaking in the drive line when I take off from a stop, no vibrations, a shake that feels like you don’t know how to drive a stick shift. I pulled the skid plate and the mount was cracked, I replaced it thinking that was the problem. Not so much, I have since replaced the motor mounts, and the entire suspension and every bushing. Front to back springs, shocks, and control arms, 230,000 miles, it needed it. Still had the shaking (I mean one hell of a shake) on take off from a stop. So I replaced the tcase chain, thinking due to the miles it might be stretched, while in there I installed the SYE with new drive shaft. I have never experienced “clutch chatter”, not even sure what it is. I am wondering if I need to due to clutch and flywheel? Some one told me that the problem is my SYE, that I need adjustable control arms. That’s why I asked, but my shaking problem has been there since day one before I did any work. So my next question is, could the shaking at take off be my clutch?

The rear axle pinion angle needs to be the same as the rear drive shaft angle. In order to achieve that adjustable arms are needed. As far as your chatter, does it go away after you gain speed?

Yes, once the clutch pedal is all the way out and you’re moving, the shaking is gone. Does not happen while shifting through any other gear. Seems to be a little worse after the Jeep has been running a while.

Sounds like your clutch pressure plate and disc may be on its way out. Have you noticed any differences in clutch pedal pressure when you push it? Can you feather the clutch pedal and reduce the chatter?

Post a pic of your rear pinion angle.

Still chatters. I’m guessing i’ll need to do the clutch.

The angle is a bit off, but this shaking issues was present with the stock drive shaft and slip yok. So take the SYE kit out of the equation, clutch?

The pinion angle looks decent. How was the pinion raised to line it up with the driveshaft? What does the other end look like?

Have someone drive your rig from a dead stop while you get forward and off to the side a bit so you can watch the rear pinion. If it is clutch related, the pinion will rise slightly and then be fine. If it is pinion angle, you'll see it hop up and down.
