How NOT to check bumpstops

That works for me! We get up to KC a couple of times a year to hang out at the Plaza or the P&L district. Great blues and jazz there.
I need to finish my build first (I WAS hoping to be done by the 4th of July, but having a few setbacks recently, and working 2 jobs doesn't help much either so it's looking like maybe mid July I'll be done), then we can pick a date to meet up. I have a friend up here that is wanting to take his stock TJ out to KS Rocks, so we can maybe make it a group thing if you know anyone else.

Ok, Ill ask...lets hear the story.

It's a short story.

I was dating a girl and it wasn't going well - lackluster companionship, generally unfulfilling, with a lack of connection despite common interest, blah blah blah - and when I belatedly began to think about why I was really unhappy, I realized that it was because I hadn't stopped to actually think about what I wanted out of a relationship before getting into one, thereby compromising myself and eradicating all hope of a good relationship. Also, the girl in question was was a total bitch: attractive, intelligent and funny, but a total bitch to everyone that she didn't need something from at the time...and I just wasn't okay with that kind of attitude. So, I did what anyone would have done in that situation: I ditched her and asked her twin sister on a date. Eight years later, we got married; that was twelve years ago, and they've been the twelve best years of my life thus far. She is, in every sense of the word, wonderful.

Moral of The Story: beware of evil twins, and if you have a choice in sisters, always pick the quiet one.

It's a short story....
But its a good one. I think you hit the nail on the head. You have to understand what your needs are if you ever hope to find a lasting relationship. Glad to hear its all good. We are both blessed.

What ever happened to her sister? Did she find happiness?

Better than what we have, here; REI is a fashion and accessory destination.

Dating advice: know yourself, and don't compromise. It's really that simple, and finding a great companion with whom you can share endless amounts of quality time is not that hard. Sometime, if you're interested, I'll share a funny story about how I found all that out. In the meantime: wife picture (also: gas tank).

See? Not that difficult. Even I can manage to find a great one.
You guys have great wives, congrats! I wish mine enjoyed going offroad with me but she hates it and barely tolerates my Jeep.

So far as REI goes, we have a couple here in San Diego and I no longer go to them. Leftist politics and a true hate for us offroaders. I was in there to look at a GPS way back when Garmin's 60CSx was hot and when I said it was for my Jeep and offroading, the place took on a distinct chill and the salesrep suddenly lost interest in helping me. the chill was like I had just turned into the Grim Reaper. REI is pretty much anti-everything I enjoy.

Those erosion control whoopties can be killer. Sometimes the person putting them in gets a little, shall we say, enthusiastic? You sure find out if you have clearance issues in a hurry.

Just in case you’re wondering, those are called water bars. And we only put them in on decommissioned roads anyhow :) still able to drive it, just more fun! Oh and I met my fiancé while wheeling! She was with one of her friends and we got to talking pretty quickly when I saw her! Highly recommend finding your partner off road

Water bars...good to know.

Just how decommissioned are those roads? Like, we're not supposed to be on them? Trying not to make life any more difficult for the Rangers than it already is.

You’re totally fine, as a general rule of thumb ever road on the national forest is open unless there’s a gate. If there no gate - then there’s no issue! We refer to them as “decommissioned” or “closed” roads because they are no longer used by the FS, logging contractors, or any other company that leases from the FS. We then bucket-rip them and take out the culverts and install water bars to prevent the old roads from becoming giant landslides of erosion. Many of them then become dedicated ATV trails where the FS recommends having 4 wheel drive or high clearance to drive them. I’m not sure how familiar you are with Avenza Maps - it’s the program we use with the FS on our phones and laptops to navigate without service. On the maps they designate what kind of road and the uses for it. If you have a particular national forest by you that you’d like the MVUM (motor vehicle use map) to i’d be more than happy to help! We also have paper copies if that works better.

FWIW, I’ve found most companies are anti something I like to do. REI is the last one I still use and thats only because it’s a one stop shop and a decent rebate system. Otherwise, it’s mostly amazon prime which also hates me and most stuff I like to do, but I get free shipping. Always a trade off.

Sweet deal and good information! I'll PM you later in the week on this subject. Right now it's the Siuslaw and Willamette National Forests.

Not so far, and I doubt that she ever will; she's made a lot of bad choices and she consistently surrounds herself with bad people, and I don't see those habits changing. If I was a better person I would feel bad for her, but I'm not, so I don't.

Maybe her bump stops just weren't set correctly. A little adjustment, and she might be just fine.

I'd say that I did my best with that, but I was eighteen at the time so "I did my best" is a patently unbelievable statement...because if anyone thinks they're any good at "making adjustments to bump stops"* - wink, nudge, harumph! - at age eighteen, they're either stupid, delusional, or both.

* - This phrase is used here as a polite euphemism for "earth-shattering sex that, through sheer quality, fundamentally alters your perception of the act."

You guys have great wives, congrats! I wish mine enjoyed going offroad with me but she hates it and barely tolerates my Jeep.

It's a rare thing; I treasure it.

So far as REI goes, we have a couple here in San Diego and I no longer go to them. Leftist politics and a true hate for us offroaders. Most of the crowd that shops at our local REI drives:
1) a less-than-five-years-old Volkswagen (preferably a hatchback).
2) a four-door JK or JL.
3) a Range Rover or 4Runner.
4) something electric and expensive.
5) something cheaper than their bike, which is - invariably - on a rack on top.

It's an offroad-unfriendly environment for sure, but money talks and the managers don't want to lose all of the sales from Crowds 2 and 3 in that list. I stop in from time to time when some of the good stuff that REI carries is on sale - mostly socks, now that I think about it - and I always get a lot of looks because I'm driving a TJ on 35's and wearing clothing without recognizable labels. Usually, a painfully-trendy salesperson tries to help me, and in turn I usually have fun with that because 99% of what's in REI is absolute garbage and it's fun to point out the deficiencies of a product to someone that just got done telling me how awesome it is, because - again - I'm not a better person. Example that actually happened a week or three ago in the camping stove section as I was scrutinizing a new stove:

Salesperson: "Hey there...thinking about cooking dinner for someone?" <had to give her credit; that was a hell of an intro and/or pick-up line>
Me: "Nah...I'm just looking at the new version of this one; I have the old one at home, so I wanted to see what changed."
Salesperson: "That's cool! This is a really great stove; I'm thinking about getting one myself! How are you liking yours so far?"
Me: "It's a piece of fucking garbage; I keep it on my 'Wall of Shame' for gear that sucks so hard that I want to constantly remind myself of whatever stupid reason I had for purchasing it, lest I make the same kind of dumbass mistake again. I ate several cold dinners because of that stove."
Salesperson: "..."
Me: "Hey, you asked. Do you want me to lie to you about something you're thinking of buying, or give you an honest answer? I can lie if you're more comfortable with that, but I'll feel bad later."
Salesperson: "No...uh...well, thanks...but I'm not sure what to say here."
Me: "Maybe you should try to sell me something else."
Salesperson: "...Do I want to do that?"
Me: "No."

I’m not sure how familiar you are with Avenza Maps - it’s the program we use with the FS on our phones and laptops to navigate without service.

Now, that is some useful information.

I use the rebate system to the point of abuse, both there and everywhere else that offers one. I rationalize it by saying that my savings help me support companies that actively support me. That's a lie, but it's a pretty one.

This is possibly the most derailed thread I think I've ever witnessed. Ha ha. I don't mind though. Our local REI is fairly decent. Sometimes they push something new, but for the most part they will occasionally just walk by and say "Let me know if you need anything or have questions." The best part of REI is the garage sales. I get most of my non-offroading outdoor gear at those. Which means even though I spend a few hundred a year on stuff I don't get hardly any dividend in return, ha ha. But I'd rather buy it 80% off than full price and get 10% dividend 9 months later.

Im sure with a little effort we can way off topic.

My dad had a shirt that said "Give me my discount". I always gave him crap about it. LOL, he is still teaching me lessons. I use them when I can. I love the garage sales. We try to make our trip coincide with them now that they are only once a month.

To think this all started with bump stops, it could have gone down hill very fast. A few drinks around a fire and I promise this would have been much worse!

Just think, @Squatch isn't even in this one! He has toned it down though, unfortunately.

Practically speaking, the whole thread is not particularly useful except for the information shared by @BuildBreakRepeat on Avenza maps and water bars, and FS roads. Some threads are for entertainment purposes only.

Bump stops are important on a Jeep. (duh!) You can get into them in an abusive manner quickly if you're not paying attention. That can get expensive fast.

There, I feel better already.

There, I feel better already.

I had waffles for dinner last night. They had almost nothing to do with bumpstops, forest service roads, and REI; there was a tenuous connection to wives, because she had some waffles for dinner, too. I particularly enjoyed the little crunchy bits of semi-caramelized pearl sugar that were mixed in with the dough.

How do you feel now?
