Power being shut off to California

Imagine how bad it would be in Berkley. WOW.
Places like Berkeley are tolerant. They deal with people from all over the world with different views on a daily basis. Things like @Chris describes are intolerance of different views, that's not a thing at a large University campus and town like that. There are protests of all kinds all the time, people are used to different views.

Not trying to dig at you, but wasn't it Berkeley that flipped stuff over and set fires before a Ben Shapiro speech, or was it Milo?

Oh yes, Berkeley, a bastion of tolerance and different views. There is a reason I stayed away from that school...

I said there were protests all the time, you showed the protests. Thanks.

With all due respect, those people are rioting, not protesting. BIG difference. Again, I know that the rioters views are not reflective of the majority there, but I would have trouble believing that place would be a tolerant environment towards me.

I have all the respect in the world for people who feel strongly enough about their beliefs to speak their mind in public. I have no respect or tolerance when mush heads with no life experience feel the need to riot and destroy public property because they feel like pitching an infantile fit while searching for a safe space to avoid getting their feelings hurt.

If you think having violent protests all the time is an indication of tolerance then there is no argument that a place is intolerant. There were plenty of violent protests from those enslaved in gulags when they tried to escape their fate. Certainly you don't think gulags are tolerant?

Back to the thread topic. Did you know PG&E tried to clear trees from their power lines and were sued in 2017 and 2018 to stop them. Don't clear trees and they get sued for starting a fire.

So really, turning off the power is the only option left.

Where I live, the power company would come through and clear cut the trees out of the way of their lines. If you plant a tree too close they'll cut it down. If it grows too close they'll cut half of it off.

But wind is the only constant in this state. Today is just on the edge of what they consider "windy" for our forecast and it's 45 mph gusts. Below that, they label it "breezy".

I've driven on the interstate before with a 50mph sustained partial cross wind. Got 18 mpg in the minivan on the way there and close to 30 mpg on the way back.

Bureaucracy sucks and that's crap.

In a barely-related tangent, some of the saws are used to clear out trees that are close to power lines are pretty amazing.

I have a relative out in CA who had a dead tree in the yard killed by bark beetles. He tried to get a permit to cut it down and the process was taking forever. I think he was on year 2 when a fire came through and 3,000 firefighters converged on his town to help push the fire around it. He was able to remove the tree quickly after under the clean up rules. There are parts of CA where one simply does not cut a tree down. Even if it's dead.

In my area PG&E will cut any trees you report being too close to a power line on your street as a free service. At a rental, I had years back the tree in the front yard kept dripping sap onto my car so I called since it was touching a line and they were out the next day.

Is anyone in CA feeling any wind? It is dead calm here.

It's windy here in North Sac, but only started to get windy about an hour ago. I don't think I have to worry about them turning my power off though. :D I guess it could be considered one of the perks for living in the city. LOL

Lots of wind where I am. We have power though - the city operates its own electric company - we are not dependent on PG&E.
That's probably how it should be across the state. I'm not a conspiracy theorist but I wouldn't be surprised if PG&E had other motives in this shutdown. Possibly trying to pass laws about clearing around lines, or an excuss to ask for a bond measure or rate increase.

The reason is really quite simple. Every time the wind blows and carries a spark, PG&E gets sued. The latest round of lawsuits forced the company into bankruptcy, most of them related to the Camp Fire in Paradise but some related to the previous wildfires in Sonoma County. No power = no spark = no lawsuit.

So let's do as Shakespeare suggests and blame all the lawyers. Or Gavin Newsom. I like to blame him for stuff.

I would be interested to see what happens to a younger white man wearing a MAGA hat there. Would be interesting. Would they set fire to him?

I heard about this on NPR and couldn't believe it. We have two giant freezers that hold frozen milk for our daughter'and that could not be replaced. I remember we had a huge power outage and our neighbor who worked at grocery store said they lost thousands of dollars in meat/dairy/frozen products.

Mojos to the Cali people — I hope you aren't affected.
