Sure, they will stop you just fine. The knuckles won't like it, calipers won't be happy, but they will stop you very quickly. Eventually the cast sliders on the knuckles for the brake pads will bend and the pads will be very loose and rattle a bunch more, but stop you it will.
Around how many miles is eventually? It's clear this isn't a permanent solution, but this is going to be a weekend wheeling rig and is a ground up build. If I can postpone $1k for brakes and still be safe I'll take it for now. Are we talking 5k miles or 20k miles. Thanks for your help.
Ground up build. CJ6 body on a stretched TJ frame. I've been lurking and reading build threads and am trying to address common issues the first time around. Last time I drove the thing it had 9 inch drums on 33's so I'm sure anything will be an improvement.
0-100,000. If you take it out and have to do a panic stop, it can bend the sliders in the first stop. If you never do a panic stop or drive it hard, it may take a very long time. Good news is knuckles are cheap and easy to replace.
Got it. I kinda figured it was a "milage may vary based on driving style". And after a panic stop bend they will still get you home/off the trail, just be loose and rattle. Thanks again.
I don't know that they will or won't get you home. They are cast and as someone who has handled more core knuckles than almost anyone on the face of this planet, I know the steering arm gets broken off a bunch in traffic accidents. That tells me that it is very possible to break off a slider.
Got it. One hard panic stop, check and possibly replace front knuckles. Upgrade ASAP.
I don't believe a panic stop will do it. A panic stop and hitting a pot hole at the same time would be cause for concern.
