Why do some people cover their license plates for photos?

I work in tech and am fairly aware of how much data various big tech companies use to build profiles on individuals, the whole thought that you drive around with it visible all day and posting it online are very different (though as smart doorbells and such grow in popularity, that difference shrinks more). People on the road aren’t going to piece together my network of friends, acquaintances, routes, etc based on seeing my Jeep (even without the license plate visible) with someone else’s in the background...

Ive gone both ways on hiding mine, but tend to if it’s not too inconvenient. It may be moot, but I choose to not volunteer more than necessary to the ad gods.

Because they are idiots!

This tinfoil hat wearing idiot that doesn't know any better according to the friendliest forum covers his license plate because it takes a minute to do it and why make anything easier for others to know all about me. Do I think it makes much difference? Not really, but it adds a step. This is my reason for covering my plate and I did it without attacking others that don't want to cover theirs. Have a nice holiday if you are celebrating. Geez.

When I first got my Jeep I covered mine, in fact my profile is my Jeep the night I got it and the plate is covered. LOL It was more of a paranoia thing. I felt until it was in my name it didn't want it to be seen. LOL I know that it didn't really matter because it was a legit transaction. LOL I don't cover it anymore. I figure if they want my info they will get it with a covered plate or not. :D
Dont worry Kim, I already have your address, I am just too lazy to come say "HI" and thank you for the stickers in person. Besides, I dont think California wants me there anyways...lol

Do you have a facebook account? are you on any other forums? if so your data is already compromised for profit. Oh and the Ohio DMV sold that data to anyone who would pay for it.

Who cares about any of it. If someone wants to scratch their damn plate out on a picture to make it .0000% harder to get an address, good for them. Why do people personally attack others for such a tiny thing like this? So childish!

In Ontario the fines are a LOT higher than that … $1,000, $2,000 and $3,000 PLUS suspensions, demerit points and even the loss of your licence. Then there's your insurance. It's not just about the money, it's about safety on the roads.

Your much higher fines and higher insurance rates pretty much prove it to be more about about the money than we were claiming is happening here.

Now regarding safety, let's imagine if there were two different drivers, both driving the same amount over the speed limit:

Driver #1 gets pulled over and gets a ticket.
Driver #2 gets a ticket in his mailbox two weeks later.

Which driver slows down after the police saw the law being broken? Driver #1

Which scenario increases the safety of everyone, or anyone, on or near the same, or any nearby, road? Driver #1

Which one brought in more money, even here? Driver #2

The problem with fines is that some don't care how high they are. $3,000 or what ever is chump change to many people. The fact that there are fines at all doesn't sit well with many people and safe driving groups (MADD for example). If you want to stop texting or drinking while driving taking away the offender's licence is far more effective and our laws do have that component. That shows that the government isn't in it just for the money.

oh Jeffrey. nice to see you have faith in the system..................a bit naive , but keep the faith brother.
I don’t need to trust the system. I hire a lawyer and that’s pretty much it on my end. I just wait to win the case for stalking, harassment, and whatever other charges I tell my lawyer to pursue and POOF! Problem solved and more money in my bank account thanks to some dumbass who decided it would be a good idea to try doxxing me.

Some of you people worry so much about the most menial crap.

Trolls harass people online because it's cheap and easy. Most online miscreants are going to take the path of least resistance. If they leave me alone because I make them do a little more work, then I guess the 10 seconds I took to blur out the plate is worth it. The ones that target specific people are going to find the information they want anyway. I'm just protecting against the indiscriminate losers.

If it's no big deal, then why to most people on the forum make up a fake name to post behind rather than use their real name? Now we have to go through the hassle of looking you up by your plate number.

The machine behind the internet is scouring for connections to use when they target you for ads. I think those people are worse then the identity theft people they sell the information to in the back rooms. Telemarketers, google, facebook, identity thieves, IRS; cut from the same cloth. They've just worn us down into thinking there is no reason to consider anything private anymore. This thread is typical of what the population has grown to accept. They've even trained most people to make fun of someone who just wants the ability to be left alone by making information private by default.

It's not that your plate number is a big deal, it's that the government is putting it online for sale to people who are collecting thousands of points of data to use as they see fit. J. Edgar Hoover's silly files were nothing.

I'm not paranoid, I just don't see the reason to help them out. I mess with their data collection garbage all the time, by mixing my name and age, occupation, and address. Why not? I don't owe them anything and they collect data on me and have a file even when I don't use their product.

Apparently if you throw some cash at it, you can find info on someone from their license plate number...

My front is removable, way easier than blurring.

I wish we could get rid of front license plates. Mine always ends up bent by about day 4.

My wife got her front one stolen after 4 months of ownership. Can't people just stop with the shenanigans? Don't they realize it's making life more expensive for everyone?

in April Ohio can take the front plate off.

I've been running without my front plate on all my vehicles for 8 years now, LOL. Finally I can do it legally.

I've done the same thing on and off with many various cars over the pat 35 years. I did get one missing plate ticket for pissing off the cop that pulled me over for some BS reason back when I was 19 yrs old. I do have the front plate on my TJ, it's bent up under the bumper but it's there. I don't have one on my 2005 Ram because there were no holes in the bumper when I bought it last year.

I'm hoping the cops won't shift into overdrive the last couple months the front plate is required.

I usually don’t run mine unless I go downtown it’s technically illegal here in Colorado but only the meter maids enforce it.
I've been pulled over for 4 speeding tickets in the past 8 years and was never ticketed for the lack of front license plate.
