4 wheel drive not engaging after removing skid plate

this might just be the angle, but the bracket mounted to the tub looks like it's missing some mounting bolts. I'd note its position in 2wd, then move it to another postion and recheck to make sure everything is moving, and the tab/bracket on the t-case is moving as well.
Oh ya it’s a mess there lol I never even checked this area until today I’m removing it all soon and putting new linkage there

You can’t get throw for sure since the play in that bracket is using it up ...the cable is a little more money , but it is soooo nice .

this thread was so moving , I’m going to move someone’s skid plate myself soon , just to sort of level things out for everyone .

....eh...does anyone know why my lever isn’t wanting to go into 4L and 4H? I don’t want to force it and break something but after I put the linkage back inside that mounting bracket I get it into 4wd and neutral and any higher it won’t go—why?

did you try taking the brake off and letting it roll and inch or two? otherwise, i'd just take a look at the linkage again. maybe get some pliers to grip the lower part of your selector lever and moving it from underneath so you can see if anything is binding.

If you're trying while parked that usually won't work.

What does it mean that you can get it into 4wd but not 4H or 4L?

The first pull from 2wd is 4H which can be done up to 50 MPH. Then comes N and then 4L. Getting it into 4L you need to be barely moving and go easy so it doesn't grind too much.

Cant believe anyone be trying to shift into 4L at any speed, that is like asking for a broken nose over a steering wheel or an excuse to buy more Jeep parts. Mine shifts into 4L and 4H at stand still without issues.

....that’s what I thought too a couple years ago I was so paranoid to put my Jeep into 4wd while moving but apparently this is how it was made to work. The 4L I don’t know about. Seems iffy to me. I’ll try tomorrow while crawling very slowly to see if it pops in...standing still and at neutral I’m a strong woman if I force any more then I did I will break the lever or whatever it’s attached to.

I also forgot to mention before lowering my skid plate the other week to work on the exhaust it did shift into 4L at a stand still too. Now it won’t after putting the linkage back in the mount... Smething is screwy....I’ll have to play around with that 15 year old linkage tomorrow lol

To go into 4L, you do it from neutral and stopped. If it doesn't go because the gears are not offset, you go forward a hair and try again..

So the issue I was having earlier today .....2wd into 4wd — no problem! Up a notch to neutral —eh...ok.....up to 4H, not a chance!! I pulled hard. Not even a budge. Nothing. I’m guessing it’s smething with linkage being rusted or something —pb blaster? That linkage is shit either way I played with it earlier it’s so old and garbage

To help you with terms. You go from 2WD to 4H (not 4WD). Then up a notch to Neutral, then up one more to 4L.

So your problem is it won't go into 4L.
