I'm a complete noobie to the Jeep scene, and the options are overwhelming! '06 TJ "X", bone stock. I'm looking to improve it for "mild to moderate" offroading, not rock crawling or other "extreme" stuff that I'm not qualified to even think about at this time. Just an enhancement to the capability it has now. The Jeep has 3.73s, 4.0, manual. I don't want to regear, place undue stress on components, lose my gearing advantage with huge tires, etc, etc. Therefore, dumb questions in no particular order:
1) I'm thinking 2 inch lift with 32s.
2) I'm also thinking keep stock 15 inch wheels. Do I really need to go to larger wheels? What's the cost/benefit ratio as opposed to the larger sidewalls involved with the smaller wheels?
3) Even though I'm not planning on rock crawling, I'm thinking of rock sliders just in case I get myself into a situation. What concerns me is I see a lot of apparent metal-to-metal contact between the armor and the body where water can run right down inside and cause rust. I'm paranoid about rust, and that was before I bought a Jeep! We lost a perfectly good '63 GMC 1 ton truck to rust and all it did was sit there! Are there gaskets or sealant I can use? Or should I use a nerf bar setup or similar where there isn't a shield in contact with the lower body? Don't want to decrease ground clearance though.
4) I want a trailer hitch for light duty (obviously) use. I also don't want to compromise my departure angle with an under-bumper receiver. I've seen a couple of aftermarket bumpers where the receiver is at least partially embedded in the bumper itself, an outfit called "Tidal" seems to have a good one at a reasonable price, plus it gives me clevis mounts.
5) Winch. Do I need one?
6) I do want onboard air for airing back up, esp. with the beaches available to me. Thinking Viair 400 with a small tank.
7) This is beyond basic capabilities and not really essential, but what about the Savvy or Novak cable shifter for the transfer case? The stock shifter sure feels klunky to me. An "old skool" gearshift knob appeals as well. I'm thinking eventual center console delete and bed liner spray-in. Then I don't have to worry about water/rust, and it would have the bare "old skool" look.
Budget is important, but I don't want junk either. Finding used stuff is mighty hard - and the stuff you do find is usually almost the price of new! All advice appreciated and welcome.
