How many times would a do it yourselfer wind up needing an open ended wrench over 1" or 22mm working on an LJ?

Are there enough things needing sizes over those that one should buy a set that goes bigger or is there only one or two larger sizes of wrench needed?

Not many I can think of. Adjustable control arms, pitman arm nut. I use a pipe wrench because I have one.

From my list...

21mm 13/16"
Control arm bolts (Savvy)
Front track bar frame side (Currie)

22mm 7/8"
Control arm nuts (Savvy)

24mm 15/16"
Front track bar frame side bolt (Currie)

34mm
Fan clutch (wrench handle to the left)

36mm
front axle shaft/unit bearing nut

1-1/2"
Upper control arm jam nuts (Savvy)

1-7/8"
Lower control arm jam nut (Savvy)

I'd like to watch you take an axle nut off with a wrench. The rest is good stuff though.

None taken. That is just a list of nut and bolt sizes.

For the control arm jam nuts I use a big crow's foot and a breaker bar. They are a little cheaper and a lot smaller than the big wrenches, and better able to grab the nut in the right position.

If all you have is a Jeep to work on then you can go by that list. I find I'm needing to go up to1 1/4 " wrench by 1/16ths. Then a cheaper set of jumbo (harbor freight, farm store) wrenches by 1/8ths to 2".
Get a decent set of 1/2 drive impact deep well socks in SAE and metric that go to 1 1/16" and you can cover 95% of the bigger nuts and bolts.

I keep a 36mm socket and my extendable 1/2” ratchet.

I carry the ~$100 on sale harbor freight tool kit for most everything else.

also have a nice aluminum adjustable wrench (from Crescent) that goes up to 1.25” if needed.

Do you use a wrench or ratchet for that one?
I believe he is talking about the large nut on the fan clutch that goes on the water pump.

Correct me if I’m wrong but I believe it’s 36mm. I don’t have my kit to look at right now.

If you want to invest just get one of these kits

Savvy short arms
Uppers 1-1/8
Lowers 1-1/2

x2 crows foot and breaker bar

Big adjustable wrench and big hammer work just as well.

True, most of the time. That is why I stated if you want to invest. I use the tool that goes on an air hammer. Another investment. Some people work on more then there jeeps.

I tend to prefer a pipe wrench over a crescent wrench when a big nut that I lack a wrench for is handy.
As to OP, I tend to try for a socket first. Less likely to slip or round off a nut. I prefer to use impact sockets for anything over 3/4". Always try and use a 6 point socket. It puts a lot of the force onto the sides of the nut instead of the corners. Of course there are just enough 12 point nuts to need a set of them too.

Basically, I'm trying to decide which set I should buy. (The roll up organizers are $15 each if I buy the set without them. The cost of the 4 metric wrenches bought separate from the set would be more than $30.)
