Who knows about Chevy Camaros?

So I have a good friend that is selling his ‘99 camaro SS T-top. He’s had this car since high school and never drives it. Garage kept with 59k miles. Since it’s not a TJ, I have no idea what I’m dealing with. I’m entertaining the thought because he said he would love for me to buy it and he would sell it to me for a couple grand less than what he would really want for it. So is this a vehicle that is worth giving more serious thought about? Originally I’ve said no but I’m intrigued. What’s the going market price for this specific camaro? Thoughts?

Having owned a number or Camaros, I can tell you that is one of the least desirable generations.

I don’t know what they go for, but I don’t think it’s anything crazy.

Yea I’m not in love with it but year and condition and engine peaked my curiosity. Also if I could get a sweet deal on it. Just checking to see if it is something I should be jumping on.

I do hate that body style but if it cheap enough, cool history. Typical GM junk interior.

And C5’s are dirt cheap. My dad sold his but it was a pretty fun car. I’d rather have a mustang, but given the choice I’d go C5 over the mullet mobile.

I’m partial to the previous even uglier 3rd generation of Camaro. Had a Z-28 in high school. Piece of shit but it was mine. Gen 4’s are staring to bring decent money. Especially low mileage SS and Z cars. Like anything they start to trigger nostalgia after a while and clean low mileage examples bring a premium. It’s a good color too. I’d buy it if the price was right.

For sure. It’s basically the same LS1 as the C5 has. Solid 350 horse aluminum engine.

I know nothing about 1999 Camaros except in Highschool I had a nitro RC car with a red ss body. But, attached is the value information from Hagerty.

The hardest part about buying from a friend who has a large emotional interest is; How will he feel if you decide it's not for you and turn around and sell it? Would he be offended if you sold it for more than you paid? If so, how would you meditate the issue? Offer him it back at the same price you bought it, split the proceeds, give him the discount he gave you upon sale and keep the rest?

My dad sold his 01 C5 with 50k on it for that. You can find nice ones like that for $12k or less. Especially if you don’t like the car.

Thanks. Yea it would have to be overwhelming “buy it!” for me to say yes. I’d rather spend $10k towards another TJ/LJ or an 05-06 tundra.

Exactly. I was like, $4k.....I might be pretty tempted.

but that’s at the top end of that gen and it’s not a SS....

And you can find nice C5’s that are lighter, handle better and if you want a real fun one, get a ZO6.

Dude. We must be brothers from another mother or something, bluegrass, Camaro's and jeeps. I owned 70 split bumper (high school) , 97 v6 that I rebuilt from totaled engine fire, and 01 SS convertible.

Ya 01 was boring as an auto. I'd definitely buy a manual but for 5k max

same here...anything after the 3rd generation just doesn't do it for me. My 1988 Z28 was a bad ass vehicle ...had a faded bad paint job, worse gas mileage than my TJ but it sure was fast!!

I had a pewter 01 trans am for 4 years and sold it for 11k back in 08 I think. I'm a bit impartial to the pontiac style over Chevy for 4th gen but the value of those has been climbing. When i sold mine camaros could be found for 6k in my area. Now any clean 4th gen esp low miles seems to be asking 12-16k (location is a big deal too)
