So, my throwout bearing went out today. I had a squealing noise when I pressed the clutch pedal and later a pop with loss of clutch operation, the pedal won't depress to engage the gears. So ordered a new flywheel (I know mine is cracked from a transmission change years ago), clutch, throwout bearing, pilot bearing, clutch fork, retainer clips and clutch alignment tool all from Crown Automotive. Are Crown parts okay or did I make a mistake?

The factory LUK clutch is highly regarded as the best clutch you can get for your TJ. I wouldn't use anything other than LUK, period, not even Crown (especially for the clutch).

Crown is okay, Sachs would be much better. The clutch kit is Sachs 1890-05.

You need to give Sachs some love.

What fooey said ↑. The National throw out bearing is better than the one that comes in the Lux kit which is junk. The Luk TOB I got was milled and assembled with an elliptical orbit. It never would have worked.

I ordered the National ahead of time based upon advice here. The Luk clutch is good. Get some Red Line MTL and change the gear oil while you are at it.

I used the Luk flywheel as well. A big improvement with that. Much smoother.

I highly recommend some Fat Tire beer while you are doing the work. It is specifically and scientifically brewed for working under Jeeps.

I've never owned a manual TJ, I'm just going off of what so many others recommend (LUK).

Crown makes "okay" stuff, but I certainly wouldn't use them for the clutch personally. Sachs was always good to me on my German cars, so I am sure that translates to Jeeps as well.

I can confirm as I have the Sachs kit and has been all good for the past few years, maybe 4 years now.

The reason I chose Sachs over LuK, and this is a Coke/Pepsi debate, were the reviews. So many LuK reviews complained about thier throw out bearing, not one or two reviews, but a boatload of complaints. Sachs had none, granted not many reviews, but nothing negative. That was the tipping point for me to go with Sachs.

I know they aren't popular but I had good luck with Centerforce clutches in both my Samurai & my SE TJ.

What about Timken Throw Out Bearings? I saw them mentioned a couple time in searches. Timken has always been good in the past in other applications. .

This clutch:

A good alternative throw out bearing if you don’t want to use the one in the LuK kit:

Flywheel:

If you replace the flywheel, you’re technically not supposed to reuse the bolts. I went with these:

The Sachs kit has a metal throw out bearing so no need to buy a LuK kit and an upgraded ToB, but good idea to recommend changing that piece.

I've got some sort of shifter bracket, transfer case works fine. I've got new rear drive shaft, u-Joints seem to be fine. I did order a TeraFlex disconnect front sway bar, pretty excited about that. Hope it gets rid of my sway issues.

If I had plenty of money (and a job) I'd install a Savvy lift kit though. It's kinda in the same area.

Question on this flywheel. I've got a 2005 TJ 4.0 with 6 speed NSG370 Transmission. This looks to be the same, but the link on Amazon is saying it does NOT fit. Just to make sure, the LuK LFW193 flywheel is what you linked to, correct?
The 91-04 flywheel is different than the 05-06 flywheel. The two are not interchangeable. I believe the 91-04 flywheel only has two spots for the crankshaft position sensor to read, but the 05-06 has three. So while it might bolt up, your engine would not run properly, if at all.

RockAuto is usually a good source for parts like these.

When I replaced mine, I went to a high inertia Centerforce flywheel. These are significantly more expensive, but make it much harder to stall. A stock replacement flywheel is fine in most cases.

Thanks a ton. I'm going to hit it with Emery Cloth after looking. I don't think it's in bad shape, and other than the 6 speed needing to be re-built, and the clutch being stiff as all get out, it runs really well. I'm sure the flywheel is fine was going to do it kind of precautionary....if not, well another excuse to tear it apart and look drink beer while I clean my tools.

Do you have a link to the flywheel you choose.?
