So since my Jeep has some hail damage I filed a claim with my insurer and they gave me a list of places to go get the estimate.

I go to the closest one which I’ve used a couple times in the past but now they have a new name.

I walk in and tell them I need to get an estimate on hail damage for my hood.

The lady says I’ll have to make an appointment because a hail damage inspection takes 1 to 1.5 hours.

I tell her there’s no way it takes that long to look at a hood.

She says they have to look at the whole vehicle.

I said no, I need someone to look at just the hood.

She has someone else come out and he says if they don’t look at the whole vehicle then they won’t fix anything else.

I said that’s fine I need you to look at the hood.

He says make an appointment.

I say I’ll find someone else who actually wants to do the work.

WTH, is it seriously this difficult?

He could have walked 10 feet out the door, counted the 20 or so dents and multiplied it by their PDR rates and been done in minutes.

I'm not sure about the auto repair industry, but in storm restoration for homeowners, I won't just "inspect your gutters for hail damage" if that's all you want. If you will not let me inspect all exterior parts of your property, I'll walk. Reason? Insurance pays shit as it's based on Xactimate or Symbility pricing, and it's a waste of my time to argue with insurance trying to supplement the claim on the back end to make it worthwhile. Unless your their "preferred servicer" they will not just accept your estimate. They will still use the above pricing software. Preferred servicers trade steady business for reduced margins. So, maybe just doing the hood is similar?

I mean when you walk into an establishment like that, isn’t it typical to make an appointment? Especially for an insurance claim, they aren’t making any money on an estimate And they have to make sure all the paperwork is spot on so the insurance company doesn’t come back at them if they believe the estimate is off

The hood was the only thing damaged. I’m running a soft top and I have Metalcloak fenders. Maybe one ding in the cowl. Had no other areas that could get damaged.

Always love info from people in the biz - appreciate your insight.

Is that some kind if insurance stipulation? Seems that would be the only reason why they're telling you that. But if that's the case then they should explain that.

They’ve always come out and taken a look.

Has never been in the past.

I've had people tell me what eas only damaged and I seem to find other damage they didn't see because I've been inspecting for it for so long. They're just trying to maximize the claim. If they only find it on the hood, then it is what it is. They likely just don't want to leave any money on the table.

Well, they left it all on the table. In the past if they found something wrong they’d adjust the claim since they are a preferred shop on my insurance.

We're they on the insurance company's preferred servicer list? If so, they may be required to inspect everything. Adjusters are required to, whether they're staff or independent. CYA.

The guy said they could just do the hood but I'd still need an appointment for a different day. Sitting in his office relaxing must have been too much for him to handle.

Yeah, they just don't want or need the biz then. Must be nice.
