Most filters come with the anti-drainback valve now. Back a decade or 2 there were many without. The Penzoil filters for most every Ford, including the F1 filter used on a lot of them, and many Honda filters lacked them. A lot of folks around here liked to substitute the F1 for their vehicles because it held a full quart of oil instead of the smaller volume their vehicles used. The thread and seal were a match.
Does that trick work on the TJ's? I would be interested in a larger oil filter for the 4.0's

What I'm running in my 04 Grand Cherokee and 98 Dodge Dakota. Will start using it in my 06 TJ 4.0 at next oil change.
Having a larger oil filter does nothing except they hold a tiny bit more oil. It does not filter any better, not at all. Like a larger screen door does not filter the dust from a Texas dust storm out any better than a smaller screen door does. The only possible benefit to a larger oil filter would be its larger filter surface area to let it keep filtering and not clogging as soon if the oil is not changed at appropriate intervals. But you'd have to be talking grossly excessive mileage oil/filter change intervals for that to be of benefit.
all good points, I guess I come from Aircooled where the extra oil capacity is really beneficial for cooling (especially because the oil filter acts as a little bit of an Oil cooler) but I don't think the 4.0 needs extra oil cooling.Having a larger oil filter does nothing except they hold a tiny bit more oil. I came from air-cooled VW engines too but the slight amount of oil in a slightly oversized oil filter doesn't make a significant difference in engine temperature. I talked to Empi (the biggest VW performance product company producer) about doing with to a VW bug I put on the track once in a while many (!) years ago and they said not to waste my time worrying about it.
interesting, I was thinking about doing a spin on filter on my 1385, she doesn't run hot, but I Figure down here in tX the extra cooling might help, and the extra filtration certainly couldn't hurt, I find the strainers in these to be terrifying by modern standards.
So my filter is a RYCO Z 89A so looks like it has anti drain back.

So Ok been out asking and this isnt available for me and high mileage oils start at 15w40 here? have been told in four shops this morning what is the point of putting a 10w30 in a higher mileage engine in extreme heat weather conditions and that the oil needs to be thicker for high mileage or worn engines.
What am I missing here? I am sure if I took out a Mortgage Redline would have one or I could buy it on ebay at $57 a quart plus shipping from US
Also spoke to the Redline rep who supplies Western Australia and he said many mechanics have no idea about lubrication technology and the MTL was perfect for my 6 speed so I bought it
