So i ended up pulling the oil pan off of my 97 4.0 to try and figure out what was causing a knock. well ended up being the #3 piston skit was found in the oil pan.
I found a used 4.0 out of a 97 Cherokee to do a engine swap with, but i wanted to clean up and put some new gaskets in the "new" engine first. when i removed the oil pan from this engine there is some discoloring on the internals that isn't on the original one. the underside of the pistons and any other bare metal surface is a dark brown to black. Evan between the oil pan gasket and the block had some of the discoloring. The guy i bought the "new" engine from said it had over 200k on it but ran great and had no problems when pulled.

Has anyone run into this before? my supposition is that it may have overheated at some point, but i am not sure.

I will try and post pictures later.

Any thoughts? thanks,
