2.5 TJ oil change and ATF flush

Itake time to change the oil on my new 97 2.5 TJ. It’s got the (I’m pretty sure is the) lifter tick. According to the sticker inside it’s got 5w30 which I think is too thin. I live in Georgia. I had read about possibly using ATF to add in the old oil, run for a little bit then change the oil and helps the tick. Curious if anyone else has tried this and had results as well as if there is a particular kind of ATF I should use. Thanks all

I cannot help you with the ATF as mine is a manual. I have heard people suggest run what the manufacture states. As far as the tick, I have tried several different things and still have not cracked the code. I have tried Rislone at the last oil change and after reading some suggestions I tried diesel conventional oil. I will try Rislone again but will try a different oil. I am leaning towards AMSOIL next change. I have added marvels mystery oil in my oil also, could not tell a difference. I added marvels to my gas and that quieted things down for a little while.

I have not tried adding ATF to oil in a jeep. It did work in my 72 Chevy blazer with good results. Maybe before my next oil change I might try it. Plus if it kills the engine then I have an excuse to replace it lol. However I think the little engine will be just fine with all my experiments. It seems to be a work horse that is low on the horse side.

Run 15w-50 or 20w-50 FULL SYNTHETIC and fuhgetaboutit
(YOU REALLY WILL BE OK!!)

I wouldn't do the ATF abra dabra kazan thing

P.s.

Run it for a bit before you've decided it helped or not. Odds are it won't help immediately but after a day or two you'll notice the change if it will happen.

The oil additives do nothing and usually just make things worse. Try Seafoam to clean out any sludge, then use the the proper oil. I always used 10w30 in mine. If that doesn't help, you can replace the lifters or buy earplugs. Those 2.5L engines are noisy anyway. Mine always had a slight tick and was still going strong at 230,000 miles.

because you live in Georgia I would run 10w30 (or thicker), manual states 5w30 for colder temperatures. I run seafoam motor treatment in my oil ~100 miles before an oil Change, you do not want to leave that stuff in your engine for more than 100 miles. The seafoam stuff seems to work, got rid of my lifter tick but it wasnt too noisy, probably didnt help that the PO didnt change the oil In 7k miles Before I bought it.

So you just put say half a can of sea foam directly into the motor, run it for 100 miles and then change? This is a new step for me. Never had a tick in any of my XJs. I’d use rotella T4 15-40 in the inline 6 and they purred beautifully

I’m pretty sure I put 6 ounces in, whatever the directions said, think it was an ounce per quart of oil. My engine was pretty gummed up and the oil was filthy, I found that seafoam cleaned it up really good.
