Mirror questions

Hi all.

So I have a 2004 TJ - and I have some questions regarding mirrors.

First - is it me (ie, am I stupid) - or are the side mirrors non-adjustable vertically? I've pushed on the top and bottom to no avail, they won't move. Furthermore, the "horizontal" motion "stops" are kinda annoying; I can barely get them to move to someplace useful. If I set my seat right, and squint, and tilt my head - sometimes it works. I just don't understand why I can't move the mirrors like I can on every other car - so I'm thinking it's me. Thing is, the manual doesn't seem to indicate that you can move them incrementally like a regular vehicle. Is this just another one of those "Jeep Things (tm)"?

If so - is there a replacement mirror I can get, or a mount - to attach to the standard mirror locations - to fab up a proper mirror (from other mirror parts from other vehicles, perhaps), or are there better mirrors out there that are fully adjustable and bolt on? This is kinda bothering me, because today I cut someone off inadvertently going around a truck because I didn't properly see them out my mirrors (my fault entirely, and I wish I could apologize to the other driver!)...sigh.

Now finally - is the rearview windshield mirror mount a standard "D" style mount? The reason I ask this is because I was looking at this thing:

Now - I like this mount, but on Amazon, it's $50.00 - so if I get it, I want to know it'll fit before I plunk down that kind of cash. Alternatively, if it is fairly standard, I might be able to fabricate something up that is similar but cheaper. I've got enough gopro knockoff mount parts that with the right extras, I could do it, I think.

The factory mirrors fold too. They have 2 or 3 stops. Maybe yours are partially folded?

And no, not a Jeep thing. My mirrors are fully adjustable. Work great for me.
Part C in that GoPro link looks just like mine. Which has not had a mirror on it in 7 years.

I can't help you with the mirror issue as I have the earlier TJ model with the metal housed mirrors, not the plastic ones.

About the gopro, use one of the pole mounts (IE Handlebar/Seat Bar Mount) to attach it to the rear view mirror stem if thats where you want it. You can also use an adhesive mounts to the back of the mirror which seems to be pretty popular as well as long as you clean the surface. If you want to get fancy, get one of those RAM mounts that use the ToughClaw system and screw it onto the mirror. Don't drop $50.00 on that mount unless you just really want to.

Are you pushing on the plastic, or the glass ? The mirrors move inside the housings, to adjust for vision.

I know that the mirrors have stops, but when I tried to move the mirror itself (up/down vertically, left/right horizontally), it wouldn't budge. I felt like the mirror might crack, so I didn't force it. I'll try it again tomorrow.

As far as the mount goes, that looks pretty standard - so I might be able to craft something in the future. In the meantime, I bought a gopro handlebar clamp mount which will supposedly work on a mirror arm too. I'll give it a shot, see what happens. But in the future, I might fab up a similar mount as that rostra one.

That's what I'm planning on trying first; I found some on Amazon that were inexpensive, worth the shot.

My concern on the adhesive mounts has been the fact that I live in Arizona, and most have a heat limit that is well within the range of what it gets up to inside a vehicle sitting in the summer sun (ie - no problem cooking food inside a vehicle here!). I'm afraid such a mount would fail over time.

I've considered that RAM ToughClaw mount thing - the price is daunting, though; there's other things I need to spend a load of money on first (next on my list is new tires, a new rim for a full-sized spare, and a tire carrier bumper for the rear). I think I could fab up something like the rostra mount using a few different parts, and copious amounts of JB Weld (lol). But I'm going to try those handlebar mount thingies first. They might be all I really need.

I tried to press on the mirror; I know the arm has 3-4 positions it pops into, but when I was pressing on the mirror, it didn't seem to want to move, and I was afraid I was going to crack the mirror if I continued. I'm going to try playing with it some more tomorrow. Thank you for the heads up!

Probably stiff from age. There should be a plastic ball and socket joint behind the glass, that allows the glass tho move. It also has a spring, to apply tension so the glass doesn't flop around. Might have some dirt or grit in it, binding it up. Push on the corners of the glass, maybe flush some water through the housing. You should be able to get it adjusted for you. My wife is 5'2" and I'm 6'1" and were both able to adjust the mirrors to see properly.

That's what it was. Friday morning, before I left for work, I messed with it, and managed to get them to move. The passenger side "popped" so it definitely was sticky from sitting. The driver's side was stiff, but did move with enough force. Got them adjusted nice now. Thank you!

Mine has a phillips screw on the underside of the mirrors that you can unscrew a little and the whole mirror loosens up quite a bit, then you adjust it to where you want it and retighten the screws. Take a look and see if you have a screw on the underside of each mirror.
