I thought I’d be cool and mount my cb with a Motobilt mount that mount in the middle of the tailgate, it works like crap, where do people mount antennas on TJ’s ?

You should ensure the antenna mount is grounded to the frame really well and mount the antenna were is will not be damaged on the trail.
No matter where you mount the antenna on your TJ; the RX/TX will always be directional.
When I relocated the third brake light on my TJ; I used the brake light wiring hole on the spare tire mount to install a UHF SO239 connector for attaching the antenna.
This setup is still directional , but it is a strong mount and is protected while on the trail.
In comparison..... I mounted the antenna on my XJ in the center of the roof with a magnet mount; RX/TX was fabulous due to the ground plane of the roof and 360* coverage.

You might not have a good enough ground at the antenna or the tailgate to the tub or both also.

^ had the tail light mount, worked great I just used them to mount my roof rack and moved the antenna up top with a custom mount. If I went back from no roof rack I'd use these again.

I no longer run the flex spring. Plenty of flex in the firestik. The firestik is top loaded, probably a better option for CB and TJ combo, more omni since it is above the roof. For the GMRS and amateur bands, the shorties are fine but if you are putting out more than a few watts, it is still better to have them over the vehicle to avoid un needed RF.

Maybe run a separate ground strap from the tailgate to the tub if you really wanted to?
Grounds and clean connections make a huge difference. I'm mounting mine on the driver's side rear where the PO had four holes drilled and I have been meaning to seal those up.

Thanks for the reply,I know it’s in a bad spot but hey IM A 2!! lol
I never said it was a bad spot, really you need to balance pragmatism vs purism. I’m okay with my radio not going 15miles as long as my group within 300 ft or so either way is good enough for most my needs.
