I have some new screws for my rear drive shaft and I want to know if I need to put any special coating on the threads

Correct term would be bolts. Some medium thread lock would be appropriate. Your choice of brand.
Yep just put a drop of blue (non-permanent) Loctite on the bolt threads.
They are in fact, not bolts. We call them that until we have to source them, then they are actually screws. Them grade 8 things with a hex on one end, threads on the other for some to all of the length? Yep, Hex head cap screw. Add a flange, and they become hex head flange screws.

Technically you are probably correct, you get a brownie. However, the issue of what is a screw and what is a bolt is not completely resolved with Machinery's Handbook distinction so we need to consult the Ancient Greeks on this subject.
I think we should make this a thirty, no, thirty two page thread out of this.
I've only ordered and paid for about a million fasteners. That and if McMaster doesn't know what they are, no one does. Call them what you like but just know why. I also call them bolts because it is easier to be all fucked up than try to explain to idiots why they aren't bolts.
