Texan Wheelin' Trip

I'm out in Dallas til January for an internship so I'm probably far from whatever event is going on but I'll keep tabs just in case. I have a severe driveline vibe in my rear shaft so I'll need to get a new shaft before I drive multiple hours like this. I also only have 2wd for the time being since I'm only regeared in one axle.

If whatever y'all are doing isn't too crazy and I could make it with just a rear axle and can get my driveshaft fixed beforehand, then sure, I'll go. I'd like to get my 33's and F/R 4.88 and super 35 beforehand but it's just all so damn expensive that I highly doubt that it'll happen.

Let me know what date everyone is leaning towards, I would prefer going in september.

Wolf Caves isnt scary, it has its extreme trails but a stock Tj or a Tj with minimun lift and tires will do fine, just be careful. I recommend having at least rock guards.

My Jeep is on 3.75" of lift and 33's.

Let me know what you come up with, im local to the Austin area. (Killeen during the week)

It takes about an hour and a half from Leander to get there, so if we can meet up and convoy that would be awesome.

Hm... that's big talk! Have you tried Slow Bone in Dallas, Good Company in Houston, or the Salt Lick in Driftwood? I think you should try those three before making any claims to the best BBQ in Texas....

I like the idea of this trip... August is a firm no for me, but the October might work.

I've had Goode Company. In my opinion, it was good but not the best!

I have not had Slow Bone so cannot speak about them.

Coopers was pretty damn good from what I remember.

Salt Lick though will always be the best in my opinion! I've eaten there probably 50 times.

Haha, nice qualifiers there! I've never had Franklin's in Austin, but it is on our list. My husband and I are sort of beer and BBQ enthusiasts, so when we travel we like to visit breweries and eat BBQ.

Of the ones I listed, I think Slow Bone is my favorite, but I'm probably biased because I'm a Dallasite.

Hm, what type of beer do you like and do you like big breweries or small ones? Most of the Dallas/FtW breweries have one or two pretty unique beers and they vary a lot in size. Everything from very small operations to Rahr in FtW which is pretty big, but not as corporate as Shiner. If you give me some idea of what beers you like, I can make a good recommendation.

I like every type of beer except Hefeweizen's and really hoppy beers. A normal IPA is good. Fruity beers are not my favs. I drift seasonally, so everything from Lagers and Pilsners in the summer to Oktoberfests in the fall to dark malty beers in the winter.

I like smaller breweries.

I've tried and enjoyed several Rahr brews, especially their Texas Red. It's an amber lager and I really do like them. I also love Belhaven Scottish Ale. It is so smooth and delightful.

For those of you that have never wheeled on granite before, be careful, the traction is phenomenal, even better than Moab. Having that much traction is great but it makes it easier to break stuff. If you think your Jeep is in a bind, it is, get out and winch.

No problem amigo! I've interacted a few times with the owner of Peticolas brewing while visiting the brewery and trying to book my husband a brewery for his birthday party a few years ago. The owner is a really nice guy and really knows his stuff. There are so many breweries around DFW now, but this one has the best small brewery hang out with the owner feel, and the velvet hammer is a superb beer.

Report back. We made our Dec trip to Dallas, Grapevine actually. Peticolas brewery closes Sunday at 6pm, about the time we were arriving, and opened on Thursday, the day after we were leaving. Little disappointed.

So we went out one night for dinner. We love small bar atmosphere w appetizers. I think the place was called Lucy Lou’s. Anyway, had such a good time we went back the next night and sat at the bar, and there on tap was the Velvet Hammer! So I went for it! And glad I did! Thanks for the recommendation. Ended up working out in the most mysterious way!
