It's been a while since I've been around here much as I've gotten pretty involved in a past interest. A while back I did some figuring (poorly) and came to the conclusion that it was going to cost too much money to take the TJ to the next level, and that I should just leave well enough alone. I figured instead it would be cheaper to get the Oldsmobile back out with my dad and get it back on the road again. I think I could have the Jeep on tons and 40's at this point and we're not even back on the road yet. The nice thing though is my dad and I have both been buying parts for the car so progress is going a lot faster than I would have been able to do on the Jeep alone.

A little history of the car:

My dad and I started building the car around '99 to be my high school car. We bought it as a roller for $600 IIRC, sadly I don't have any pictures from back then other than a couple of it at the track after we got it running. After we brought the car home we stripped the interior, cleaned out all the mouse droppings and nests, repainted all the interior panels. We found some bucket seats in a ford car of some sort, they looked a lot like mustang buckets and got them reupholstered along with the rear seat. We cut the entire trunk floor out not because it was rusted but to mini-tub it and install subframe connectors and rear frame rails. My dad welded in a 6 pt roll bar and and bought a Currie narrowed 9" for the rear. We had a TH350 rebuilt and got a torque converter from a friend. We rebuilt a 4 bolt main SBC with flat top pistons, moderate flat tappet circle track cam, Edelbrock Victor Jr heads and super victor intake along with Holley 750. The carb didn't fit under the hood so we put a harwood scoop on it to make some room. After we got it on the ground my dad was unhappy with how wide the front wheels sat and bought a set of fat man fab narrow tube control arms. We were able to stuff a 13.50 tire in the back with skinny fronts on a Centerline Convo Pro wheels. We got the car running and ran the Summit series races for a couple seasons at our Local track (Famoso raceway). After I went off to college the car mostly sat around my dad driving it from time to time and we got it out for the March Meets at Famoso one more time while I was in college. After that it spent a lot more time in the garage until I took it for its final cruise that killed the poor little TH350, second gear died in some manner and it got parked in the back yard. That brings us to a while back when we pulled the disintegrating car cover off of it.

We pulled the engine in the back yard and got it stripped apart to send to the machine shop.

We then pushed the car out of the back yard and pulled the front clip off of it.

Then we stripped the front suspension in preparation for some weight loss via a manual rack and pinion.

Installed all new delalum bushings in the front control arms and QA1 double adjustable front shocks.

Cut the "hips" off the firewall, made a couple new cover plates and repainted it.

Then we started in on the rear suspension. We bough all new rear split mono springs, caltracks, and spring sliders from Calvert Racing.

Welded in a patch panel to fix some quarter panel rust.

Then we polished the front wheels and got the new front runners mounted up.

Sandblasted and cerakoted the Hooker headers

Got the new QA1 double adjustable rear shocks installed along with adding some bump stops to the shafts.

Cleaned up the fuel cell and installed a new cap.

New 35 spline rear axles came in.

New aluminum center section (4.56) with a drag spool and soft pro gears came in. I wonder if the drag gears would be good for rock crawling?

Got the new Smith racecraft gas pedal mostly installed. Still have to poke the hole through the firewall to connect the shaft to the carb once the engine is in.

Then that gets us to our current status of working on getting the new seats installed this past weekend.

We've already got the replacement powerglide trans (with transbrake) in the back yard waiting to go in and the engine has been at the machine shop for a while now waiting it's turn.

Engine plan:
Pro Systems custom E85 4150 carb
Super sucker 1" spacer
Super Victor intake
Edelbrock Victor Jr heads
Jones custom ground solid roller cam and lifters (260/267 @.050", .440"/.440" Lobe Lift, 111 LSA, 1.6/1.5 rockers)
Comp magnum rockers with stud girdles
Race Tec custom 10cc dome pistons
CP 6" rods
Scat forged 3.75" stroke crankshaft (383 ci)
Billet main caps

Hoping to be able to run mid-low 10's in the quarter on pump E85 and cruise around town a bit. Should be somewhere about 6-650 HP and 5-550ft lbs.

Curious , what's your deck height and final C.R. ?
Machine shop is going to take the deck down to 0 or close to it. I told him he could leave 5-10 thou if he wanted and I could use a shorter gasket. I’m going to shoot for .040” quench and with the 64cc chambers is should come out to about 13.3-13.5:1 compression depending on gasket bore diameter.

I’m really excited to try out the cam this will be my first roller and custom cam. I’ve read a lot of really good things about Jones Cams though so I gave him a shot. Using his springs and lifters as well.
