Painted doors don’t match

Just had red doors painted patriot blue and the color looks perfect at certain angles and lighting but then it don't match perfect at times... like it's missing some purple ... anybody have any idea on a door decal to cover below the windows ... around the window is a perfect match ... you'll see in the photos.. or if I could sell them for 1200 .. painted by professional shop ... he claims the correct toner is discontinued and says it's the "flop" of the paint that's off and it could be because the robot painted it at a different angle ... I'm heartbroken and can't afford another sprayout... I've got all the guts and the glass rolls up and down perfectly on both sides and I can't afford to paint the whole jeep for 2800 either and if I have it blended then my half doors won't match ... lost on what to do... any ideas... located in Reidsville NC

The difference is only noticeable it direct sunlight at a downward angle ... its perfect around the windows and if you get down looking at it level it matches I'm just lost on why it's not matching completely ...... looks great not in direct sunlight

Also purchased new exterior door handles as the original ones have the broken spring so they flop like their loose

You probably need to do some paint correction on the rest of the Jeep. You have years of abuse on the factory clear coat, and a DA buffer, some polishing supplies and a few days of work may get things where you need them for short money.

The doors look like they match the upper portions of the Jeep well… hood , cowl and windshield frame. I think the effort to undo years of wear and tear on the lower portions of the tub would yield better results.

Oh man, that’s heartbreaking. Hate to say it, but I’d either sell the doors or paint the whole Jeep to match. FWIW, the blue on the doors is a great color. As an aside, I’d be concerned about why the shop painted them when they knew they’d turn out a different color. Might be worth pursuing

They sprayed 2 cards with both flavors of paint according to paint code .. the darker turns out was for later dodge trucks... the color was spot on when sprayed on the cards but only used a portable sunlight to compare to the jeep inside the building ... never in the real sunlight and as far as years af abuse and fade .. he took a buffer and some cutting compound and hit a spot beside the door and it's still not the same... the purple tint is not there ... here are the 3 cards that were sprayed ... mine the later truck and the one on the stick is using the obsolete toner but even that is missing the purple shading .. all thre don't match at all so no amount of buffing will change the factory color .. it has purple tint and the new paint don't and after the sun hit it this morning the wife agrees that it don't match and I'm not gonna be able to live with it ... so the doors are for sale as listed with new handles on the outside and perfectly working glass... can leave them disassembled if someone would like to get them painted in your color .. maybe have better luck than me

That isn't even close..did the painter have your jeep to use as a color match? This may be a case of you get what you pay for..no amount of work or staring at it will make it match the color is way off...either you make them fix it or deal with it. Just fyi the correct way to do it would have been to blend into the fenders and quarter panel

Blending is what he suggest now but considering the missing purple tint I think blending will only make a bigger more noticeable spot that don't match

Yes I left a half door to match and it's spot on inside or out of direct sunlight ... look around the window frame next to the windshield its perfect but in the sun it's missing the purple shading

You’ll never be able to get a true match unless they blend the painted color into the fender and quarter panel. The only colors that will match when a whole panel is painted and butt matched to another panel that is either the original color or and older color is black and sometimes white.

Were the red doors primed? This could have something to do with it as well.

Even the best of painters cannot butt match colors perfect like this and will want you to paint blend the panels opposite the panel that is being color changed to get the best blend possible.

Ok I sent him a text about selling the doors and he wants a piece with original paint to send with his supplier to try and match... free to me so I'm game ... he's got one of those cameras that you push up against the paint to take a picture for matching ... he said it never works for a perfect match that we need to go by the paint code and blend but now we gonna try to match with a very expensive paint matching camera so I guess we will find out ... had a tracker yrs ago that was color matched to paint the hood... with a camera and it was absolutely perfect color ... he says blues are almost impossible to match without blending

Totally agree that sections don't match, my point is that there are probably sections of the existing paint that fade into each other already and that's why the paint shop said feathering the job is common.

Already tried a cutting compound between the door hinges on the ds .. no change

Dropping off the doors tomorrow at the shop where painted.. he's gonna get with the paint supplier and see about a fix for the missing "flop" or red shading that gives it the purple tone ... not to be critical of my friend but I'm betting it will need to painted all over to not be able to tell as some of the ingredients are discontinued and its 17yrs old so I'm guessing I will still have doors for sale late next week ... not gonna blend on the jeep cause I think it will leave a bigger spot that don't match and can't afford to spray it all but I guess we will see what the magician can come up with in a few days .... told him no hard feeling either way as I understand the situation about painting completely but still really hoping for success...

I agree with this. Over time, the clear coat is “damaged” all over by microscopic scratches. This in turn “lightens” the appearance of the paint.

I painted some half doors about a year ago and they came out slightly darker than the rest of the green paint, pretty similar difference in shade as yours. After going over the Jeep a couple times with some Meguire’s Ultimate Compound and an orbital buffer, the doors and the rest of the Jeep looked perfect.

If your paint is in good shape, it wouldn’t hurt to clean up the clear coat anyways. You might be surprised how well your new doors might match after. And it would give the shop a more accurate color if you get them done again.

A good paint shop can match any color with the original. I had two of my Jeeps painted in a small section and the color was an exact match to the 18-20 year old paint. The place I went was called Paint Perfections and they had to live up to their name though.

As above there has already been a cutting compound and a buffer used on the old paint and it does not change ... I can see myself in the 17 yr old finish and I get its old and weathered but the paint didn't gain a purple shading from weather and sun that is reflective at an angle... and not at a different angle
