I don't necessarily mean in terms of off-road capability. I just mean in the way that TJs are "classic", are easy to work on, are easy to find parts for, and have a good community of DIY enthusiasts, hobbyists, or collectors. What types of motorcycles have those same perks?

Suzuki DR-Z400. It's been made with very little changes for almost 20 years, with a no frills, utilitarian styling, has a very reliable engine that is known more for torque than power, isn't overburdened with technology, has a huge aftermarket parts and customization base, is in military use (in Australia), won't win any races but will go damn near anywhere.

I find it to be much more TJ-like than a 650cc dual sport because it's not so unmanageably heavy.
 
alll of you are crazy to much hp except the ct 90. wait for it wait for it Yamaha TW200!!!!!
can do 70 on a down hill with a tail wind and is like a mountain goat . 300 or so pounds. I got 3 basketcases 2 of them run for any takers lmao. Oh and the good thing is tw200 is still sold new today

Any Harley model hands down.... Even now with computers and such they are still easier to work on than many other bikes.

Honda CT-90. Goes anywhere, easy to work on, cult status. I wish I'd never sold mine... Basically a 2 wheel Jeep, complete with dual range "transfer case".
Cool. A quick Google search suggests that it does indeed have a big following.

Really? I'm surprised. From my brief days of riding (a Suzuki Intruder), I got the impression that Harleys had gone the way of luxury riding for doctors and lawyers who wanted to look cool but didn't want to work on them. But you've found that they're easy to work on, easy to find parts for, and have a good following of DIY-type riders?

Harley's are easy to work on. If it breaks down, just take a stroll up the shoulder of the road until you find the part you need that fell off the last one to go that way!

Go onto any of the Harley forums and you'll find a TON of people working on their own bikes. And I'm talking from a Sportster all the way up to a CVO bike like I have. And once it's out of warranty or if you don't care you can flash your ECM for more power.

I do all my own maintenance on my bike and swap out my own parts 95% of the time. About the only thing I won't do is the ABS brake system flush.

Yes a Harley costs more than most other bikes and yes you are paying for a NAME but they are nice bikes. And this is coming from a ex sportbike rider.

I switched to Buell before I went full HD and still wish HD hadn't screwed up with them.

While this might be true of HD of old it no longer is. Just the same as some misconception of Jeeps...
 
You do know what HD stand for right? Hundred Dollars. Thats because everything you pick up at the dealership is at least a Hudred Dollars.

Yep that is why if you're SMART you don't buy most parts at the HD dealer. Sort of like going to the Jeep dealer.....
Not gunna argue that they ain't cheap but they are a load of fun. And I'd much rather work on my HD over the Honda I bought my daughter.
