Radiator fan noise

A friend told me my mechanical fan for the radiator sounded loud. Asked why I didn't have a splash guard. Did TJs come with splash guards for the engine? Mine sure doesn't have one. I've never given it any thought and can't remember how loud the radiator fan was when I was test driving TJs a couple years ago before I got mine.

How loud is your mechanical fan?
Manual fans any louder than automatics?
( I have the Nv3550)

Should the fan always be on? My mech fan doesn't ever turn off and it roars in low gear which I assume is normal.

Fan clutch was replaced a few months ago and it isn't any differnt than when I got it.

The TJ fan is loud, no doubt at all. Mine roars and it's always roared. When you get on it, sometimes it sounds like a friggin' wind tunnel under the hood. I don't think this is abnormal at all. If it is squealing or making bad noises, then I would be worried about the fan clutch going bad. However, what you're describing sounds perfect normal.

If you're still in doubt, take a video, post it to YouTube, and then link to it here. We'll be happy to tell you if it sounds normal or not.

Haha sounds good. I learned to drive on my dads auto Jk and his is super quiet. I know TJs are flat out louder in all aspects but I just never thought about it till it was mentioned.

Oh yeah... The JKs aren't even loud at all. The 4.0 engines in our TJs (and the XJs as well) are sinfully loud. Every single one I've owned (I've owned 5) has been crazy loud.

Irrelevant but... Did the WJ come with an electric fan? I know the XJ had the same as ours.

You mean mud flaps? It was an option on some of them I believe. Mine didn't have them when I bought it.

All 4.0 engines (including the one in the XJ) have a mechanical fan driven by the serpentine belt.

Not mud flaps but an under engine splash guard. "To keep the engine bay dry" because that's clearly a big deal for a wrangler. I can't imagine TJs coming with one. Know it all friend claims "all cars do" haha I insisted it's not a car

Thank you for asking this question. I noticed the same thing after replacing a worn out fan clutch. The original fan clutch was nice and quiet, but it was also failing and the Jeep would heat up at idle. the new fan clutch is louder, but it also working much better. I think what you re hearing is normal.

Yeah I haven't found this before on a TJ thread just Jk threads. Figured I'd ask what's normal. Glad it was able to help someone else out too.

YJ’s came with the splash guard so that makes me think that the TJ more than likey came with one too.

Its actually functional, all in an effort to keep air moving through the radiator and not from around the engine bay or under the engine bay.

Does anyone's Jeep have an under engine splash guard? I haven't seen any with them granted I only look at the frame on every parked TJ I see not under the engine.
